Kevin Smith Says Ghostbusters 3 Is Going To Make A Lot Of People Happy

Despite the skepticism surrounding Ghostbusters 3 at the moment, Kevin Smith believes tht the film is going to make a lot of people happy.

It was only last month when we learned that Jason Reitman was at work on Ghostbusters 3, but it’s felt much longer than that given all the drama that’s unfolded since, as the simmering tension around the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot bubbles back up to the surface.

Among those who took to social media to voice their thoughts on the next installment in the franchise was comedian, actress, and reboot-era Ghostbuster Leslie Jones, who thinks that Sony going back to the original continuity is “a dick move” and “like something Trump would do.” Predictably, Jones’ comments received a fair amount of backlash online, prompting Ghostbusters 2016 director Paul Feig to step in on social media and show his support for her.

Since then, the controversy surrounding the project hasn’t exactly died down, but if Kevin Smith’s to be believed, there’s absolutely nothing to worry about here. The filmmaker revealed on a recent episode of his podcast that he’s known about Ghostbusters 3 for a while now and has also spoken to Reitman about it. Though he wouldn’t say what he was told, he did tease that exciting things are in store.

“He told me some s*** and, to be fair, he did not give it up freely. I had to drag s*** out of him and I had to trick some s*** out of him, but he told me some s*** that had me go like ‘alright, now I just need to stay alive until 2020’ because this movie is definitely worth seeing.”

“Definitely going to be a Ghostbusters movie that makes lots of folks happy,” he added. “I think we may have something here. I think it’s gonna be special.”

Given that Smith never shies away from hyping up movies he’s excited about, we’ll approach his words with caution. That being said, we’re definitely intrigued by what Sony and Jason Reitman are cooking up but at this stage, the one thing they need to come clean about is which of the original cast members will be returning.

At first, we were told they’d all be back. Well, those who are still around, that is. But then Ernie Hudson cleared the air by explaining that nobody’s approached him about returning yet.

As for Bill Murray, we’d imagine he’s probably pretty skeptical of the whole thing after his cameo in the 2016 reboot, and may just decide to be done with the series. Dan Aykroyd, meanwhile, has seemed a lot more optimistic about returning but again, there’s been no confirmation on the matter yet from Sony and as such, all we can do is speculate.

With Ghostbusters 3 set for July 10th, 2020 release though, hopefully we’ll start to form a clearer picture of what to expect in no time at all.
