Triumphing in three out of its seven nominated categories, Ryan Coogler’s film not only provided Marvel Studios with its first Academy Awards, but also beat the record for most Oscars won by a single superhero movie. In recognition of these accomplishments, the Russo Brothers took to Twitter with a few kind words:

“Congratulations to our Marvel family @theblackpanther for taking home 3 Oscars last night. A massive applause to Ruth E. Carter, Hannah Beachler and our dear Community pal Ludwig Göransson.”

To break down these name-drops individually, Ruth E. Carter took the Oscar for Best Costume Design, Hannah Beachler and her colleague Jay Hart won for Best Production Design, and Ludwig Göransson – who also happened to work with the Russo Brothers on NBC’s Community – took home the award for Best Original Score.

Black Panther wasn’t quite the only Marvel-related movie to find success on Oscar night though, with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse also winning for Best Animated Feature Film. Nonetheless, as far as comic book adaptations go, T’Challa’s solo debut was easily the biggest victor of the night, and though many fans were upset that Black Panther lost Best Picture to Green Book, the fact that the feature was nominated at all in the category marks yet another “first” in superhero cinema that Coogler’s film can take credit for.

But while the director now has some high expectations to live up to when he gets to work on Black Panther 2, the Russo Brothers are in the midst of accomplishing a daunting feat of their own following up 2018’s highest global grosser. We’ll see how they fare in this task when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26th, 2019.
