The first trailer has premiered for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, the film adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer’s popular novel, starring Thomas Horn, Tom Hanks, and Sandra Bullock, directed by Stephen Daldry, and adapted by Eric Roth.

In the story, Oskar (Horn) is a 9-year-old boy in New York City who finds a mysterious envelope, containing a key and labeled “black,” in the closet of his deceased father (Hanks) who died in the September 11th attacks. Bullock plays his mother, who is dealing with her husband’s death and her son’s unusual curiosity.

Oskar goes on a journey, speaking to everyone in NYC with the last name “Black” to hopefully learn more about his father. This is what the trailer is hinting at when it says that the journey of one will touch the lives of many. The trailer itself is a blend; it starts it kind of silly, becomes incredibly sad, and then ends on an uplifting note with U2 in the background.

While the book with nothing short of inspiring, I can barely think of a moment upon reading it that I wasn’t sad. I hope the film carries that tone to the big screen, because Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is a deeply moving novel that could really prosper as a film if done correctly.
