There’s not much we know for sure going into Avengers: Endgame, but the general expectation is that the fates of both Iron Man and Captain America are on the line, seeing as Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. have completed their contracts as of the fourth Avengers movie. But Marvel surely aren’t cruel enough to bump off not one but two of our favorites in one fell swoop, are they? We’ll have to see, but given the choice, which hero would you want to survive?
That’s the impossible decision that the folks over at ComicBook.com put to their Twitter followers. Over 5,500 social media users voted in the poll to save either Tony Stark or Steve Rogers and one emerged as the winner. It was a close call, but Iron Man was named the hero that most fans want to survive Endgame, earning 55% of the vote to Cap’s 45%.
There are many reasons why fans might have voted this way. The Armored Avenger is the father of the franchise, after all, kicking off the MCU in 2008’s Iron Man 11 years ago. As such, it’d arguably be the most devastating if he was to bite the bullet while protecting the universe from Thanos.
Fans could also be looking to the future here, though. At least two other characters are primed to take over the mantle of Captain America if Steve dies – Bucky and Falcon, respectively – while there’s not really anyone who could fill Tony’s mechanical boots. As such, keeping Stark around instead of Rogers would ensure that we have both an Iron Man and a Cap in Phase Four.
Alternatively, many may have voted based on the behind the scenes rumors we’ve heard about the stars’ futures with Marvel. We’ve been primed for years to expect Evans to move on from the franchise, but Downey Jr. hasn’t given us too much cause to worry – until we recently learned that he hasn’t got a fixed contract with the studio anymore, that is.
