Kevin Feige Explains The Captain Marvel Post-Credits Scenes

With Captain Marvel now in theaters, the internet can finally stop with all the hearsay and speculation around Carol Danvers’ solo debut. Better yet, since the Flerken is officially out of the bag, that means Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige is also free to share a few thoughts on the movie’s two post-credits scenes. On that note, bear in mind that a few Captain Marvel spoilers lie ahead.

As you may have seen by now, the first of the post-credits sequences brings us back to present day MCU, when Captain America, Black Widow, War Machine and Bruce Banner are trying to figure out what’s going on with Nick Fury’s pager. Their answer comes with the sudden arrival of Carol, who has one question, “Where’s Fury?”

Needless to say, the scene is a tease for Captain Marvel’s appearance in Avengers: Endgame, and in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Feige confirmed that the sequence was shot during the filming of the Avengers: Infinity War sequel. The producer added that the plan was always to bring Carol into the fold by seeing “that call being made in the tag of Infinity War, and then seeing that call answered in a surprising, unexpected way in Captain Marvel.” And now that Carol has joined up with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Feige seems excited about the onscreen chemistry we’re about to witness:

“One of the great things about introducing a new character is the anticipation of getting to see their interactions with existing characters.”

Then, of course, there’s that second post-credits scene, which may not tell us a lot about the future of the MCU, but does give us the sight of Goose the Flerken retching up the Tesseract on Fury’s desk. According to Feige, including Carol’s lovable “cat” was the plan from the get-go:

“In the early days on the movie, we’d go, ‘Well, we know there’s Carol Danvers, and we know there’s the cat. Let’s fill in the rest.’”

There are certainly worse ideas to base a whole movie around, and both Carol and Goose seem to be faring well with filmgoers, with Captain Marvel currently thought to be on course for a $155 million-plus domestic opening weekend. But as impressive as that is, we’ll no doubt be seeing Carol in an even bigger movie next month when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26th.
