The poll was conducted in two rounds. In the first heat, Iron Man comfortably beat Black Widow and Hulk with 67% of the votes, before Thor won his round against Captain America and Hawkeye with 68%. After that, the two winners were placed head to head in a final showdown that garnered over 15,000 votes, and by the skin of his teeth, Thor beat Tony Stark with 51% of the votes.

Just a couple of years ago, the results would’ve almost certainly been very different. While Thor’s first two solo movies certainly have their fans, few would rank them among the MCU’s best, but with 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, Chris Hemsworth’s character shot way up the superhero rankings for many a filmgoer. Thor sustained his momentum in last year’s Avengers: Infinity War, too, with his arrival in Wakanda and his chemistry with Rocket often being singled out as two of the movie’s highlights, even if his failure to go for the head continues to draw ridicule.

Of course, Iron Man still holds a special place in the hearts of fans, and with Avengers: Endgame expected to be Robert Downey Jr.’s final outing in the MCU, you can imagine that a lot of viewers will soon be getting all misty-eyed over Tony’s departure. We’ll find out if Marvel Studios’ first hero goes out on an act of self-sacrifice or settles down for a quiet retirement when the film hits theaters on April 26th.
