It’s been a huge week for Captain Marvel, with the movie opening to a whopping $153 million domestically, before bringing that figure up to more than $196 million in the days since. Add on the film’s impressive overseas numbers, and you’re looking at a worldwide total of more that $559 million that’s likely to grow considerably over the movie’s second weekend.
In short, it’s safe to say that Carol Danvers’ solo debut has utterly defied the negative backlash it’s faced online, and in a recent Instagram story from Brie Larson, the actress took a moment to thank her fans for making Captain Marvel the hit it was and continues to be.
“Hello, um, I never really considered myself like a vlog talking to the camera phone person, but I just wanted to say thank you,” Larson said. “This last weekend was really special, and I know that not just me but so many other people from the cast and the crew, we’ve spent years and a lot of our time working on that film and bringing that story to life so I just wanted to say thank you.”
The Oscar-winner went on to stress how much it means to her that the filmgoing public is taking an interest in her movie and putting their time and money into supporting the MCU’s first female-led outing.
“I know that you know this or hope that you know this, but it’s not possible without you, and buying a movie ticket really is a vote,” Larson said. “It’s a way of vocalizing your feelings and I appreciate your passion and support, and to see you in the costume and writing about your favorite parts or the emotion that you felt in the theater feels incredibly validating.”
In the new book Captain Marvel: The Official Movie Special, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige reaffirms that Carol Danvers “is about to take the lead and be at the forefront of the entire Cinematic Universe,” and in this past week, the studio has been given all the more reason to push forward with their plans for the character.
While a sequel has yet to be officially announced, Feige has already teased a few ideas for Captain Marvel 2, including the suggestion that the film might take place between the events of her first film and next month’s Avengers: Endgame.
Speaking of which, a new trailer for the Avengers: Infinity War sequel dropped just yesterday, and offered a brief clip of Carol interacting with her fellow superheroes. The fans are already loving the chemistry between Captain Marvel and Thor, but we’ll find out what else is in store for the heroine when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26th.
