Avengers: Endgame has been the subject of more speculation than any other MCU movie to date, but even less than three weeks away from the film’s much-hyped release, co-directors Anthony and Joe Russo have said that no single fan theory has got it quite right.
Speaking to journalist Jake Hamilton, Anthony Russo remarked that while some fans get “kinda close” to guessing how the Avengers: Infinity War sequel will unfold, no one ever really hits the bull’s-eye.
“Here’s the thing, the fans are so passionate and they spend such a long time living with these characters, thinking about these characters, and they’re using their imaginations to follow where these stories could possibly go,” Russo said. “Sometimes they’re wildly off, sometimes they’re kinda next door to what might happen. … Here’s the thing, nothing’s ever that close. You can get kinda close, but it’s never exactly.”
Joe Russo then offered a reminder that they consider it their mission to deliver something that fans and filmgoers can’t easily predict.
“Our mission’s always to surprise people,” the director said. “So we try to make really surprising choices.”
Actor Robert Downey Jr. made similar comments in a recent featurette, in which he offered his guarantee that “there is no way anybody could guess what’s going to happen.” Of course, there’s every chance that the Marvel team is just trying to throw off the fans. After all, the Russo Brothers were the same pair who falsely claimed that the official title of the Infinity War sequel wouldn’t be taken from any dialogue in last year’s release.
Either way, it’ll be interesting to look back on some of the fans theories from the past year and see how close people got after the film comes out. For example, by far the most popular prediction for how the team will reverse Thanos’ snap is through time travel. There’s certainly a very strong case to be made for the claim, but have we been reading the evidence wrong all this time? We’ll find out when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26th.
