In the Game of Thrones season opener Sunday night, viewers were treated to some pretty epic one-liners. Daenerys Targaryen let us know that dragons eat “anything they want,” while Cersei exclaimed to Euron, “You want a whore? Buy one. You want a queen, earn her.” Quite the line, except for the fact that moments later she gave him one of the saddest “come hither” looks ever.
Jon Snow also uttered a pretty memorable quote though, and it was great. And thanks to a recently revealed deleted scene, it just got a whole lot better.
If you’ll recall, the premiere saw Jon riding a dragon for the first time and as he and Dany dismounted from her pets, he humorously told her that she’d ruined horses for him forever. In the full scene, recently released by HBO in a behind the scenes featurette seen below, Jon adds, “It almost seemed like he knew where I wanted to go.” Though this was left out of the episode itself, these words hammer home two facts that we already knew/assumed; that Jon’s a Targaryen, and he’s one of the only people, by birthright, on the planet who could ride a dragon.
The deleted scene also adds wildfire to the popular GoT fan theory that dragons are mentally linked to their riders. The series has hinted at this from time to time throughout the years. Namely, when Drogon rescued his rider (or maybe his wife?) from the fighting pits in Meereen.
It’s a little scary to think about, too. Now that the Night King has control of Viserion, who knows what evil, crazy plans he has for his new pet going through that frozen brain of his. Or, now that he’s technically dead, can Viserion even be mentally controlled? That question’s probably one we’ll get an answer to, and soon.
