Here’s How Far In The Future Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 Is Going

Star Trek: Discovery's recent second season finale wrapped up the run by, to coin a phrase, going boldly where no other show in the franchise has gone before. For the past two years, Discovery has taken place 10 years before the events of The Original Series but in season 2's fourteenth episode, the crew of the titular Starfleet vessel entered a portal which took them far away into the future.

Naturally, fans are desperate to find out more about what’s going on here. And while he’s not spilling all the beans just yet, co-showrunner Alex Kurtzman did help define the time jump a little better while speaking with THR following the finale’s broadcast. For one, Kurtzman clarified that Cmdr. Michael Burnham and the rest of those on board the U.S.S Discovery will be “jumping 950 years into the future for season three.”

This puts Discovery‘s new setting as the 33rd century. To demonstrate how far off the beaten track of Trek lore this is, let’s put it into the context of the previous Trek series. The latest date explored before now was 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis, the last adventure for The Next Generation crew which was set in the 24th century. The upcoming Picard series starring Patrick Stewart, meanwhile, is due to move forward by 20 years, but that’s still only on the cusp of the 25th century.

The only other entry in the canon that’s close to this new timezone is the recent Short Treks episode “Calypso,” which must take place 50 years after Discovery season 3. This was done to foreshadow the time-jump twist, though, as it featured an abandoned Discovery, lost in space. Over the rest of the series. we’ll presumably learn what led the ship to this sad point.
