In these last few years, Anthony and Joe Russo have given the Marvel Cinematic Universe several of its biggest box office smashes, each of which has helped boost the pair’s prominence as in-demand directors. But now that Avengers: Endgame has wrapped up the current era of the superhero saga, it seems that the siblings will be moving on to the next phase in their careers.
In an interview with GamesRadar, Anthony Russo confirmed that the two of them have no further movies lined up for the MCU after Endgame:
“It’s our Endgame, at least for now. We don’t have any plans for now to make any more Marvel movies.”
Of course, given how mutually beneficial the Russo Brothers’ relationship with Marvel Studios has been, it comes as no surprise that Anthony remains open to the possibility of some day returning to the franchise:
“It certainly may come up in the future at some point. We have a wonderful working relationship with [Marvel Studios] and a great passion for what they’re doing.”
Speaking of working relationships, the Russo Brothers are set to collaborate once more with Spider-Man actor Tom Holland for their next feature film, which will have the duo operating on a smaller scale than we’ve seen for their last few movies:
“We’re going to shift gears and direct a much smaller movie this summer with Tom Holland called Cherry, which is loosely based on a real story about a veteran of the Iraq War, who suffers from PTSD… gets a heroin addiction and ends up robbing banks to sustain that addiction.”
Though Cherry is scheduled for release next year, filmgoers in North America are still waiting to see the Russos’ final MCU flick, which finally hits theaters tomorrow. That being said, Endgame has already arrived in cinemas in various other territories across the world, and so far, the movie’s box office figures suggest that the Russo Brothers have delivered their biggest hit to date.
On its first day, the film grossed a global total of $169 million, beating the single-day records in China, Taiwan, Thailand, Australia and (in terms of admissions) Korea. Not too shabby, and you can expect Avengers: Endgame to do similarly well when it comes out in North America on April 26th.
