A little over a week after the release of Avengers: Endgame, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has blown past the $20 billion worldwide box office mark. It’s hard to believe such an unprecedented number has been achieved. Or is it?
After hitting roughly $1.2 billion globally and $350 million domestically in its opening weekend, the fourth Avengers outing helped the MCU worldwide total box office pull reach its current level. According to Box Office Mojo, it’s sitting at $20.1 billion as of this writing.
Obviously, Endgame is a movie that’s all about the numbers, and big ones to boot. Trillions of lifeforms dying and being brought back to life. Billions of dollars earned from movie tickets. And Robert Downey, Jr. making around $100 million for starring in it. Endgame is crushing money-making records all over the planet, some of which its predecessor, Avengers: Infinity War, set itself.
So, the past and current performance of the MCU have proven to be bright, but let’s look to the future. We have the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home arriving in July and it might just join the $1 billion club, given the success of Homecoming. Or it might not. Walking out of Endgame, my first thought as the funeral scene ended was how can we possibly watch any more movies with the Avengers in them after this, including Spider-Man?
It really seemed like last weekend was the end of an era. We lost characters who’d been with us since the beginning, and Peter Parker will no doubt still be reeling over his loss in his next adventure. Nothing will be the same for our heroes or their fans after Avengers: Endgame, and only time will tell how well any future features in the Marvel Cinematic Universe perform.
