HBO’s Game Of Thrones is fast approaching its final closing episode, but there’s still very much to look forward to in the fantasy world of Westeros.
As you may already be aware, the network recently cancelled production on one of its Game Of Thrones spinoffs. Thankfully though, HBO is still in the process of developing another prequel series, allegedly focused on the Targaryen bloodline. Not only is it rumoured to be set thousands of years before the Seven Kingdoms became embroiled in the battle between the living and the undead, but it’ll also potentially star Naomi Watts in a lead role. However, that’s not all that’s in the pipeline for Game Of Thrones fans.
Writing on his personal blog, George R. R. Martin – the author of the original books that inspired the super popular TV series – has said that there are at least three more successor shows currently in development for folks to look forward to.
We have had five different GAME OF THRONES successor shows in development (I mislike the term ‘spinoffs;) at HBO, and three of them are still moving forward nicely. The one I am not supposed to call THE LONG NIGHT will be shooting later this year, and two other shows remain in the script stage, but are edging closer. What are they about? I cannot say. But maybe some of you should pick up a copy of FIRE & BLOOD and come up with your own theories.
This isn’t the first time that Martin has made a tease like this, referring to Fire & Blood, the novel that covers the fictional history of the House of Targaryen. With a second volume coming out soon, Martin’s essentially suggesting that the upcoming spinoff shows may well be based on the same subject matter as his new book.
Conversely, the other Game Of Thrones followup show that’s in development is expected to shoot its pilot later this year. Specifically, this series is rumoured to take place during the Westeros’ Age of Heroes, which is the period when the Great Houses were first founded. Tantalizing, eh?
