As if Pokémon fans and moviegoers alike weren’t already being spoiled enough with the imminent release of Detective Pikachu, yet another treat has been discovered via the first Japanese screenings for one of 2019’s most hotly-anticipated films. Brace yourselves, for this one’s a doozy.
Confirmed last year via the end credits for Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us, The Pokémon Company announced that the film responsible for kickstarting a years-long craze, Pokémon: The First Movie, was currently in the process of being entirely remade. Radio silence has largely become the norm since then, however, with only scarce scraps of new info dropped over the last few months. Perhaps the biggest surprise to surface so far is the revelation that unlike the original, Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution will be an entirely CGI affair, meaning there’ll be no hand-drawn depictions of Ash Ketchum or his various ‘Mons in sight this time around.
Good news or bad: we’ll leave that to your own personal discretion, though fans of the franchise in Japan will now know, better than most what the final result will look like. As reported by encyclopedic Pokémon fansite Serebii, a fresh new trailer for the animated flick is being aired as part of Detective Pikachu‘s overseas premiere.

As far as the footage contents are concerned, that’s yet to be revealed, though Serebii does note that there are also new music beats accompanying the action on-screen. At this early stage, it remains unconfirmed whether audiences worldwide will be treated to the same trailer, though a concrete answer will likely coincide with Detective Pikachu‘s arrival Stateside on May 10th.
Speaking of the latter, as its English-language release inches ever-closer, stars Ryan Reynolds and Justice Smith have begun opening up about their experiences, not just with filming, but the franchise as a whole. Smith, in particular, finally revealed to the world his personal all-time favorite Pocket Monster, though it’s definitely not what you think. As for Reynolds, he believes that Detective Pikachu could be the start of something very special indeed.
