Robert Downey Jr. Shares BTS Photos From Iron Man’s Big Avengers: Endgame Moment

Everything comes to a head in Avengers: Endgame when Iron Man and Thanos have one final face-off on the battlefield. In a mirror of their last confrontation in Avengers: Infinity War, this time Tony has the Infinity Gauntlet and plans to use it to wipe Thanos from existence. The Mad Titan arrogantly claims "I am inevitable." To which Tony has the perfect reply, saying "I am Iron Man" before snapping his fingers and saving the universe. But at a great cost, as the force ultimately kills him.

It’s a moment that reduced every Marvel fan to an emotional wreck when viewing it for the first time in theaters and now, Robert Downey Jr. has shared a different look at the instantly iconic scene. The actor took to Instagram today to bring us a series of behind-the-scenes shots which capture Tony’s snap. Each picture focuses on three monitors showing Downey against a green screen, with each shot progressing the climactic act further.

See for yourself in the gallery below:

We’ve previously heard that not only was this a devastating moment for fans to witness, but it was also a very tough scene for Downey to film. In fact, the Russo brothers and producer Joel Silver had to convince the actor to reshoot the sequence, after they decided to add in the “I am Iron Man line,” as he didn’t relish the idea of going back into such an emotional place.

As you surely know by now, it’s been confirmed that Avengers: Endgame is it for Stark in the MCU, with his death having a big impact on the universe going forward. The recent Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer, for instance, promised that the sequel will focus on Peter Parker’s grief following his mentor’s self-sacrifice. The promo even teased that Spidey would be “the new Iron Man,” taking over from Tony as the face of the franchise. Not that anyone could replace Robert Downey Jr., mind you.
