Love or hate her character, Lena Headey brought the house down as Cersei Lannister during her eight season run on Game of Thrones. Literally, once by herself and once with the help of a dragon. Figuratively speaking, it was pretty much every time she was on screen. From her walk of shame to her death in Sunday’s episode, you have to admit, Cersei was captivating.
Headey, who portrayed Cersei in the show, did one hell of a job and as such, fans are pretty upset about how she died, but the stars of Thrones can’t be blamed for lackluster writing. While folks are posting tributes to the Lannister sister and other characters who perished on social media, the actress has shared a farewell of her own on her Instagram account.
The caption goes like this:
There she goes. It’s been fun, and bonkers. I loved her. I am grateful for the opportunity. Massively thankful for your encouraging and supportive love along the way. And now her watch is ended (I know she’d never make it, knights watch wouldn’t have her .. but still..)
In “The Bells,” the penultimate episode of the series, Jaime and Cersei Lannister died in each other’s arms while the Red Keep collapsed on them. Fans were hoping for a more…symbolic death; either by dragon fire or having Jaime impaling her with his metal hand. Her death was quite poetic, though. Remember the Sept of Baelor? How fitting was it that another rather large building flattened her?
Bonkers it was, seeing Cersei’s madness develop into its own fire-breathing monster over the years. It ultimately lead to the death of not only herself, but her own nephew/son Joffrey. And it was with twisted delight that we watched.
The final episode of Game of Thrones airs this Sunday on HBO, and you can bet we’ll be tuning in.
