Game Of Thrones Star Says She’s Disappointed By Her Character’s Death

“Dracarys.”

It’s Dany’s go-to command when communicating with her dragons, and it also proved to be the final word uttered by Missandei of Naath, who met a grisly demise during the Game of Thrones episode, “The Last of the Starks.”

Sure, the show’s impassioned viewers are still reeling from this past Sunday’s installment, “The Bells,” in which much, if not all of King’s Landing burnt to the ground at the hand of Daenerys and Drogon, but Missandei herself, Nathalie Emmanuel, recently admitted that she was disappointed by her character’s death.

You’ll no doubt remember that Missandei was brutally killed in front of Daenerys and Grey Worm as they stood beneath the walls of King’s Landing. Enraged, Dany turns to Drogon, thus beginning a spiral of rage that culminates in the literal decimation of the Lannisters and their reign. But on a personal level, Emmanuel couldn’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment upon learning her character’s fate.

To be honest with you, when I read the script for it, I was like, not surprised that she died because I had been expecting it for a really long time. So many people die in that show and I guess I didn’t think I was any safer than anybody else in that respect. But I am fully aware and engaged in the conversation of representation because I am the only woman of color in this show that has been on there regularly for many seasons.

While she was a little disheartened to learn that her days as Missandei of Naath were numbered, the actress went on to acknowledge her prominent, recurring role in Game of Thrones, particularly as she is the only woman of colour who features regularly. Indeed, alongside Grey Worm, the lovestruck duo carved out an audience of their own, only to be cruelly separated in season 8. Such is the Thrones way.

Emmanuel continued:

It’s safe to say that Game of Thrones has been under criticism for their lack of representation and the truth of it is that Missandei and Grey Worm have represented so many people because there’s only two of them.
