As was to be expected, last night’s season finale of The Flash has left everybody reeling. In short, Cicada II was handily defeated, Eobard Thawne is now in the wind, Cisco Ramon apparently rode off into the sunset, and Nora West-Allen is dead. Yeah, I think we’re going to be talking about this for months to come.
Of course, we’re all looking for little hints as to what may await us in the next season during an episode such as this. And while there unfortunately wasn’t any teaser for whomever may be the next big bad (though the Red Death remains a possibility), we were gifted with an Easter egg letting us know of another character from DC Comics canon that could appear within the next year.
You see, when Ralph Dibny returned to his office after receiving high praise from Sherloque Wells, he sat down to review a case file marked “Dearborn.” Being a Detroit native, I first thought it had something to do with Dearborn, Michigan, but then I eventually realized the producers are teasing his wife-to-be: Sue Dearborn.
Naturally, she’s better known to readers as Sue Dibny, but she’s obviously yet to wed Ralph. And though she hasn’t been around as long as, say, Lois Lane, Sue debuted all the way back in The Flash #119 in March of 1961. So yeah, she’s firmly part of DC history.
Come to think of it, her introduction could allow for the Arrowverse to travel to some particularly dark places. As you may recall, her murder was central to 2004’s Identity Crisis, which would be ripe for adaptation in a future prime time crossover event. Not only that, but she was later “resurrected” as part of the Black Lantern Corps during Blackest Night, though I think it’s far less likely we’ll see that storyline translated.
Right now, all we can do is wait and see if Sue shows up next year. In the meantime, you can catch encore presentations of The Flash‘s fifth season on Tuesday nights on The CW.
