These next few months are shaping up to be a real treat for longtime fans of horror movies. Aside from It: Chapter Two – whose debut trailer is sure to give you nightmares – Orion Pictures and United Artists Releasing are teaming up to release Child’s Play, a remake and reboot of the 1988 film of the same name.
Directed by Lars Klevberg and produced by Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg, this new entry in the long-running series will not see any involvement from creator Don Mancini. More importantly, Brad Dourif, who’s played Chucky – the franchise’s iconic serial killer doll – in every installment, is not returning to lend his voice acting chops.
Instead, that role has been given to veteran actor Mark Hamill, who’s best known for playing Luke Skywalker. Aside from his iconic role in the Star Wars series, Hamill has made a name for himself with his voiceover work, having portrayed the Joker in several Batman animated series, films, and video games.
In the past, producer Grahame-Smith has promised fans plenty of blood and gore, and it looks like he wasn’t lying. As reported by Bloody-Disgusting, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) recently passed judgment on Child’s Play, having handed the film an “R” rating earlier this week. Their reasoning? Well, it turns out that the Lars Klevberg-directed reboot is chock-full of “bloody horror violence,” as well as strong/profane language.
Based on the gory trailers and blood-soaked promotional images, this doesn’t come as a surprise, though with an “R” rating, Child’s Play will have a bit of an uphill battle when it comes to the box office. Still, we’re glad that the reboot isn’t toning things down for the masses, and we can’t wait to see Chucky reign terror on the big screen one more time.
