With yesterday’s unfortunate cancelling of Swamp Thing becoming a hot talking point, fans were dealt another blow when word got out that Warner Bros. are reevaluating the DC Universe streaming service as a whole. In my view, a platform devoted entirely to one area of fandom was always a risk, but I still find this news disheartening.
In the midst of all the Swamp Thing hoopla though, a representative for DC Universe itself posted an official statement on their community boards in an effort to stamp out “false rumors.”
Here it is in full:
“Hi friends,
A million thanks for your patience. We understand this has not been an easy time for you as fans, and I will do my best to provide you with a satisfying answer.
First, some updates:
The full 10 episode season of Swamp Thing will continue to air on DC Universe with new episodes released weekly. There are no current plans for a Season 2.
We appreciate there are questions as to “why”, but unfortunately we are not in a position to answer at this time.
And now, the good news:
DC Universe continues to develop new shows, new seasons, new stories, more availability, and more platforms. We’ve got a lot of exciting plans for our other shows in the works, and look forward to sharing more in the coming months.
That’s all the information I have to share at this time. Now that you have the goods, we will be going back through the threads and removing the false rumors and speculation that this choice means DC Universe or any of our other original series were affected.
Feel free to ask questions in the comments below, and I will answer to the best of my ability.”
Our first takeaway from that is the confirmation on all ten episodes of Swamp Thing season 1 airing in succession. There was no doubt in my mind, but reaffirmation is always welcome. Though they won’t mention why it was given the axe – and probably can’t for legal reasons – financial woes surrounding the production have been documented.
The other thing to talk about is their ongoing commitment to new content. At the time of this writing, fans should expect for the rest of Young Justice: Outsiders to air this summer, in addition to Stargirl and Harley Quinn arriving before the end of the year. Titans season 2, meanwhile, probably won’t drop until early 2020. Beyond that, it’s a good bet that Doom Patrol season 2 will swiftly follow, so fingers remain crossed for more original programming.
Of course, nobody on their end is going to admit to mothballing DC Universe entirely, so we’ll keep an eye on the situation. Though it can’t be ruled out that Titans and its sister series could be added to a WB streaming service similar to Disney Plus, that doesn’t have quite the luster of something devoted solely to the DC Comics brand.
