Contrary to what some of your gamer friends might have told you, Apex Legends is not dead in the water. In fact, Respawn Entertainment’s take on the popular battle royale genre is coming back in full force. Sure, player counts might have dropped over the past few months – an unintended consequence of some rather annoying bugs and plenty of persistent cheaters – but it looks like Electronic Arts has a lot in store, as evidenced by their pre-E3 press conference, which took place earlier today.

As we recently reported, not only will Season 2 (officially titled Battle Charge) kick off in a few weeks, but Respawn pulled back the curtain on the game’s newest character, Wattson, as well, putting an end to months of speculation, rumors, and hype. Set to debut on July 2nd, the new season will bring players a brand new legend (Wattson), a ranked mode, a fresh Battle Pass (complete with weekly and daily challenges) and plenty more.

For those who are itching for a brand new weapon though, you’ll definitely want to keep your eyes peeled for the L-STAR, which is shaping up to be a deadly addition to the game’s ever-growing arsenal of guns and gadgets. This new plasma fueled EMG can be seen in the gameplay footage embedded below (be sure to skip to the 35:00 mark) and not only does it pack a real punch, but it can also be used to knock open closed doors, which is sure to be useful in close quarters situations.

Players will also find a new weapon, the L-STAR, making its debut in Season 2. This energy machine gun hits hard with hefty projectiles that pack a serious punch, but this power comes with a price – sustained fire causes the L-STAR to overheat and briefly stop working, so you’ll have to master its rhythm to make full use of it.

Other than its penchant for overheating, there’s one more big drawback. The L-STAR is a gold tier weapon, which means you’ll only find it in care packages. If you do manage to get your hands on it though, be sure to conserve your ammo – like all legendary weapons, it can’t be replenished with ammunition found in the wild.

If you happen to be in Los Angeles for E3, you can check out the L-STAR for yourself at EA Play 2019. If not, you’ll have to wait until Season 2 of Apex Legends kicks off in early July.
