New Black Widow Set Photos May Break The MCU Timeline

Marvel has kept quiet on the Black Widow movie so far, even though production is already underway on Scarlett Johansson's first solo outing in the MCU. Thanks to reports and leaks, however, all the signs are pointing to the film serving as a prequel. Rather than resurrecting her following her death in Avengers: Endgame, Black Widow will explore Natasha Romanoff's early years, probably in the 1990s.

At least, this is what we thought before seeing these set photos. In the gallery below, you’ll find two images that show Natasha fleeing from Taskmaster – the villain of the movie, revealed in other leaked pics – in what looks to be a thrilling car chase. Kudos to MCU Cosmic though for noticing that the car is actually a BMW released in 2017. With that in mind, how can Black Widow be set 20 years prior to the release of such a vehicle?

Obviously, this leads us to speculate whether the film is actually set in the much more recent past. However, there are big problems with that option as well.

Say the date of the car’s manufacture means Black Widow is set in 2017. If that’s the case, then why isn’t Natasha sporting the blonde hair she had during the time she was a Secret Avenger with Cap post-Civil War? Alternatively, maybe the car is a few years old and it’s set in the five-year period after Avengers: Infinity War. Except the same problem surfaces: where are the blonde tips the heroine had during this time?

Either using this make of car was a bit of slip-up on period authenticity by the production team, or there’s another explanation for its appearance that we haven’t figured out yet. In any case, we should learn more about Black Widow soon, as Marvel will likely finally spill the beans at next month’s San Diego Comic-Con.
