Why The Avengers: Endgame Re-Release Didn’t Feature More Deleted Scenes

In an obvious attempt to beat Avatar’s all-time box office record, Marvel has re-released Avengers: Endgame in theaters with a few minutes of bonus content. And while the movie’s weekend gross suggests that there are quite a few MCU fans out there who’ll lap up any new footage they can get, others have been left disappointed by the meager volume of fresh material offered.

In particular, the re-release packs just one deleted scene: an unfinished sequence in which Professor Hulk rescues civilians from a burning building. The scene is included as a post-credits feature, alongside a Stan Lee tribute and a quick preview of the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Whether or not this added content is worth the price of an extra ticket remains debatable, but if you’re surprised that the re-release isn’t offering a more generous helping of deleted scenes, it’s worth remembering that the production of Endgame didn’t leave a lot of material on the cutting room floor.

Indeed, even before the film’s initial release, co-director Joe Russo told Collider that “almost everything” they shot for the movie ultimately made it into the theatrical cut. In the same interview, Joe’s brother Anthony Russo went on to explain that they “love tight, propulsive storytelling,” leaving little room for superfluous content.

That being said, we already know that the Hulk sequence isn’t the only deleted scene that we’ll have a chance to watch. Specifically, the upcoming Blu-Ray for Avengers: Endgame will reportedly feature six new scenes, titled “Goji Berries,” “Bombs on Board,” “Suckiest Army in the Galaxy,” “You Used to Frickin’ Live Here,” “Tony and Howard” and “Avengers Take a Knee.”

We’ll no doubt learn more about this unused material in the next few weeks. But in the meantime, the MCU’s Phase 3 comes to a close with the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home on July 2nd.
