The upcoming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and its surrounding media looks set to reveal many of the franchise’s mysteries, from Rey’s parents and Skywalker lineage, through to the backstory behind Snoke and other characters. A new theory though says that Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi could be returning for the latest Star Wars movie, albeit most likely in a cameo appearance.
The most obvious reason why Obi-Wan could be making a comeback is the tradition of Force Ghosts in the series. In previous movies, we’ve seen Anakin (with multiple actors), the older Alec Guinness Obi-Wan, and others appear in different guises. However, one fan has suggested a more novel explanation for Obi-Wan being part of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, whereby:
“I was thinking to an episode of Rebels where Ahsoka and Ezra are watching an Anakin technique tutorial with a Holocron. And I was thinking about in the Canon comics where it was mentioned that Kenobi had done something similar for Luke to learn and had left recordings in his cabin.”
We think this is at least plausible, and will allow one of the franchise’s key characters to play a role in closing out this part of the saga. Furthermore, a cameo would tie in with the expected Obi-Wan television series on Disney Plus, which will come after a standalone movie was apparently scrapped. McGregor also seems to be reprising the character in the show, so extending this to a movie role makes sense to us.
It’s also possible, however, that Obi-Wan could be one of the Force Ghosts in a theorized battle between the spirits of different Jedi and Emperor Palpatine. Either way, we’re keen to see Obi-Wan have some role in the climax of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker when it hits screens this December, especially given the influence the character has had on the series.
