After Solo: A Star Wars Story bombed at the box office last year, multiple projects were reportedly put on ice over at Lucasfilm, including the planned Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone movie. But, given that it remains common knowledge in the Star Wars fanbase that striking down Luke’s old mentor only makes him more powerful than you can possibly imagine, learning that a TV show featuring the character is currently in development isn’t too surprising.
Admittedly, at this point, it seems there’s hardly a figure from the Star Wars saga that some source or other hasn’t alleged might have a TV series on the way, but we’ve heard from a few outlets now that an Obi-Wan show is the “next top priority” for Disney Plus. That claim has been backed up this week by SWNN, too, who have a pretty good track record when it comes to scoops. As such, we’re inclined to believe that the Mouse House is indeed cooking something up.
That being said, it’s still best to take this report with a pinch of salt given how many Star Wars-related rumors are floating around at the moment. Though after Solo‘s weak box office performance showed that the franchise has its limits on the big screen, Disney Plus is certainly looking like a strong alternative channel for telling new stories.
Besides, with The Mandalorian shaping up to be a nice substitute for the canceled Boba Fett film, it’s easy to imagine Disney being able to find a place on the upcoming streaming service for McGregor’s take on one of the property’s most cherished characters. Or at least, we hope they’re able to.
In any case, with Star Wars Celebration quickly approaching, it shouldn’t be long now before we find out for certain if Obi-Wan Kenobi has a future in the franchise. But don’t be too surprised if the Mouse House drops an official announcement on us next month.
