Doctor Who Season 12 Said To Be Darker And May Feature Cybermen

Jodie Whittaker's first season as the Thirteenth Doctor was notable - and controversial - for avoiding any familiar foes. However, this rule was loosened for this year's New Year's special in which the Daleks made their grand return. We already know that Doctor Who season 12 will follow suit with the Judoon jumping aboard but now, a rumor's pointing to the only other monsters who can measure up to the Daleks putting in an appearance.

The Mirror is claiming that the Cybermen are set to make a comeback in next year’s run of the sci-fi show. They’ve got the supposed plot of their episode, too. Apparently, the Time Lord will face her old enemies in the 19th century, with the cybernetic soldiers – who could be described as the dead brought back to life – even inspiring Mary Shelley to write Frankenstein.

What’s more, this particular story is said to just be part of a general push towards making season 12 “darker” than the last. Here’s how the Mirror’s source puts it:

“This new run is much scarier than Jodie’s first year and will definitely put the frighteners on fans. Things are about to get darker for the Doctor.”

This could be good news for fans missing the Cybermen, but those who know their Doctor Who might be a bit suspicious of the report. You see, Big Finish released an audio drama in 2011 called The Silver Turk, which sees Paul McGainn’s Eighth Doctor encounter some Cybermen with Mary Shelley.

Now, it’s perfectly possible that the TV series is adapting this idea for the screen – that’s never happened before, but it’s possible. Still, the similarities between The Mirror’s story and a pre-existing piece of Who media suggest we should take this with a grain of salt for the time being.

The Mirror also previously brought us the news that another winter special may be coming our way before season 12 gets here in 2020. Though that’s also yet to be confirmed. In any case, stay tuned for more on Doctor Who‘s return, whenever exactly that might be.
