Much like every other MCU movie before it, Spider-Man: Far From Home is packed to the rafters with Easter eggs and blink-and-you’ll-miss-them references to Marvel Comics.
It’s a genuine love letter to New York’s web-slinger, and credit must go to Jon Watts and screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who together introduced a post-Endgame MCU with one or two twists along the way. They also honored the MCU’s legacy with scores of callbacks and references to previous installments – to say more would be verging on spoiler territory – and it seems they maintained that mindset behind the lens, too.
Case in point: the casting of Dawn Michelle King as E.D.I.T.H. (Even Dead, I’m the Hero), Tony Stark’s AI-powered assistant that’s left in the possession of Peter Parker himself. The moniker itself takes on a whole new meaning thanks to Far From Home‘s first post-credits scene, but that’s a story for another day.
King, on the other hand, is an undisputed MCU veteran, having worked as an editor on heavy-hitters such as Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor: The Dark World, Marvel One-Shot: All Hail the King, Ant-Man, Spider-Man: Homecoming and, of course, Far From Home.
You’ll no doubt recall that Jennifer Connelly voiced F.R.I.D.A.Y. in Spider-Man: Homecoming, which was actually the star’s second Marvel role, given she previously played Betty Ross in Ang Lee’s Hulk movie back in 2003. We’ve come an awful long way since ham-fisted stories of superhero drama, thanks in large part to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its continued success.
Up next is the top-secret Phase 4, which will likely be unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con this coming weekend. Meanwhile, Far From Home is at $850M and climbing.
