It’s official: Ewan McGregor is returning to the Star Wars universe for his own Obi-Wan Kenobi series, on its way to Disney Plus. That’s all we know for sure about the project, but obviously fans are going into overdrive theorizing what shape the show may take. Naturally, it’s widely agreed that it’ll be set during the gap between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, when Obi-Wan was keeping an eye on Luke Skywalker on Tatooine.
If this is the period it’ll explore, then it stands to reason that Luke himself will turn up in the series as well. The future Jedi master as a boy could play a key role if the show decides to double down on Obi-Wan’s whole purpose being to protect Luke. Jason Aaron’s run on the Star Wars comics have given us a taste of Kenobi’s life during this time already, as several issues featured Luke reading Kenobi’s journals, revealing tales from his youth when the pair got into scraps on the desert planet.
Then again, this might not be the most exciting and dramatic route an Obi-Wan show could take. Mark Hamill has previously joked that a prequel based around his character would be “pretty boring” given that all the interesting stuff happens later on in his life. Even if the series whisks Obi-Wan away on his own when he’s called back into action for some reason, he’ll have to return to watch over the young Skywalker by the end.
It seems like an inevitability, then, that Luke will appear in some shape or form in the Obi-Wan Kenobi show, either for just a cameo or a substantial role, whether he’s a small kid or a teenager. Hopefully we’ll find out some additional info on the project at D23 next weekend, but in the meantime, let us know what you want to see in the series in the usual place.
