A better version of the ambiguous first teaser trailer for Christopher Nolan’s new film Tenet has been leaked online today. Anyone hoping to gain some valuable insight from this one-minute clip, however, is going to be disappointed. The subtitles are unfortunately only in French, yet that’s not even the most confusing part.

The footage onscreen shows John David Washington’s character closely analyzing what looks to be a bullet hole in a glass window. The trailer then cuts to some heart-pounding scenes of him in very precarious situations, ultimately resulting in a closing shot where he’s inhaling some kind of gas. What any of this means is still anyone’s guess, but it looks pretty intense.

It makes sense that this teaser is so enigmatic considering how little we know about the movie as a whole. So far, all that’s been said is that Tenet is “an action epic evolving from the world of international espionage.” It’s also been announced that the film features a stellar cast of stars that includes Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Clémence Poésy, Michael Caine and Kenneth Branagh.

Some have speculated that the flick will be a surprise sequel to Nolan’s 2010 sci-fi thriller Inception. That would definitely be quite the shock, but it’s not like it hasn’t been done before. M. Night Shyamalan pulled off a similar trick by revealing at the end of Split that the movie was actually a follow-up to his earlier film Unbreakable.

It’s unknown if Nolan is planning to do the same or if his upcoming movie will be a standalone experience. Either way, though, audiences should be excited for any project coming from one of the best directorial minds of this generation, even if we’re still pretty clueless as to what the feature is actually going to be about.

Tenet is set for release on July 17th, 2020.
