Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn is considering filming a sequel to his acclaimed crime thriller. The Golden Globe-nominated movie was based on a 2005 book of the same name by James Sallis. The writer is releasing the sequel to the novel, Driven, later this year, which the director would adapt as the original film’s follow-up.

ScreenRant is reporting that Winding Refn has said the following in regards to a sequel:

Let me just say that I haven’t made up my mind yet. Stranger things have happened…I’m just so sick about talking about Drive. You’re always happy with the success. But I’ve talked about this movie extensively for more than a year, so that’s it.

Winding Refn’s ambiguous confirmation comes after some suggested that Drive‘s main character, the Driver, played by Ryan Gosling, was in the process of dying in the film’s final moments. On that note, the director added:

Well, all of my films always have open endings…Because I believe art is always best when…you talk about it and think about it.  Maybe once in awhile I’ve gone too far, but always believe in finding the right balance. And in Drive he lives on for more and new adventures.

If Winding Refn does decide to move forward with adapting the Drive sequel, it will surely be just as electrifying as the first film. Gosling was more than memorable in the role, balancing extreme violence with intense emotion and little dialogue and Refn’s confident camerawork turned the film into something truly dazzling. Let’s hope this all comes together and that we hear more news shortly.
