According to 24 Frames, Mitchell has just been named curator of a weekly film series staged by the LACMA and Film Independent.
Deadline reports that Kate Winslet is set to star in Jason Reitman’s coming-of-age pic Labor Day. Winslet will star opposite Josh Brolin in the drama that Reitman (Juno) penned and will direct.
According to Deadline, Simon West just signed on to direct The Expendables 2, the sequel to Sylvester Stallone’s 2010 action pic. Not only did the geriatric-on-‘roids actioner warrant a sequel, but the pick of West comes after a long and laborious search. After Sly made it known that he would not be directing the sequel himself, a supposed list of top directors went into the vetting. West wins out, and it's far from bad news for the film. West has some great action pics under his belt, like Con Air, The Mechanic, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and The General's Daughter.

Producer of upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has acquired the TV rights to the Cabbage Patch Kids brand, with plans for a potential animated TV special. According to THR, producer Galen Walker bought the rights on Monday from brand owner Original Appalachian Artworks.
Tom Hanks will re-team with director Robert Zemeckis in Major Matt Mason, a toy-to-film project based on Mattel’s ’60s-era doll of the same name. According to THR, Hanks will star and produce the 3-D live-action space adventure through his Playtone Productions, and is in talks with long-time collaborator Zemeckis to direct.
Sarah Palin, amidst flying rumors of a possible presidential run, is about to get two feature documentaries devoted to exposing (and espousing) her life and political career. A figure-friendly documentary by Tea-Partier and filmmaker Stephen Bannon hits AMC theaters next month, while a secretive film project is in the works by British documentarian Nick Broomfield. According to information leaked to 24 Frames, Broomfield is working on a “scathing” documentary of the Republican former Alaska governor that could be ready for a theatrical release soon.
