It's all kicking off today. Earlier this morning, THR reported that Henry Cavill had hung up his cape and departed the Superman role amidst a wide-ranging DCEU shake-up. We'd already known that there were some problems negotiating his contract to appear in future movies that had also jeopardized his cameo in Shazam!, but most industry watchers had expected Cavill's team and Warner Bros. to hash something out so they could get on with production of Man of Steel II for a 2020 release.

Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League were intended to provide the bedrock for a cinematic universe to rival the mighty MCU. Ever since Batman v Superman opened to savage reviews things have been, on the whole, going wrong for DC. The most dramatic failure was the total disaster of Justice League, generally considered an embarrassing mess best forgotten. Marvel Studios And Disney Begin Their Black Panther Oscar Campaign
Marvel Studios and Disney are very serious about Black Panther's awards season prospects and are now beginning a comprehensive and long-lasting campaign to convince the Academy that it deserves recognition. Some might think they're fighting an uphill battle, too, as the Academy has never smiled upon 'genre' pictures, with superhero movies generally receiving nods for special effects or makeup. The closest one's come to genuine success is Heath Ledger's posthumous Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for The Dark Knight.

By all accounts David Gordon Green's Halloween is going to be the best entry in the franchise since the 1978 original. Advance reviews are glowing, claiming the film is genuinely scary and disturbing but also cinematically brilliant. Arnold Schwarzenegger Turned Down A Cameo In The Predator
It's safe to say The Predator hasn't had the best of weeks in the run-up to its release on Friday. Not only has it received a largely negative response from critics (49% on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing) but it's also been caught up in an extremely bad bit of press when it emerged that Shane Black had hired a convicted sex offender to play a part in the film without telling the cast. To add insult to injury, it appeared that Olivia Munn had been hung out to dry by Black and the cast when she demanded an apology and that his scene be cut. With all that swirling about, Arnold Schwarzenegger may be breathing a sigh of relief that he chose not to cameo in the movie.

Watchmen Co-Creator Dave Gibbons Says HBO’s Show Is Fresh And Unexpected
HBO's take on the seminal graphic novel Watchmen is already picking up an enormous amount of hype. HBO executives adored the pilot, the casting is excellent and the sense of mystery around the production (described as a 'remix' of the original comic) has fans desperately theorising about what it is. While it's unlikely that Alan Moore is ever going to comment on the show, the original artist and co-creator Dave Gibbons has read the screenplay for the pilot and thinks it sounds pretty damn good:
