The crackling energy that Lethal Weapon scribe Shane Black brought to his two directorial efforts, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Iron Man 3, have us eagerly anticipating his next film, 1970s-set detective noir The Nice Guys. On top of Black's involvement, we're also excited by the fact that Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling have secured the lead roles of two unlikely partners who team up to solve unusual crimes. And today, our anticipation just grew again, with word that the talented Jack Kilmer has joined in a supporting role.
Though Liam Neeson has propelled many an action thriller to big box office numbers, his gritty noir A Walk Among the Tombstones was not what you'd call a big hit - and that's a shame, considering that the hard-boiled detective story is a much better movie than Unknown, Taken 2 and Non-Stop added together. Luckily, for those of you who missed it in theaters, Universal Studios Home Entertainment has just announced that it will be bringing A Walk Among the Tombstones to Blu-Ray on January 13th next year.
Perhaps no modern-day filmmaker has endured as much critical drubbing as M. Night Shyamalan, the once-promising director of The Sixth Sense and Signs who went downhill fast with a brutal series of five flops in a row, each somehow more horrendously executed than the last. Now, however, Shyamalan may finally be on the right track - flying under the radar, he recently shot a low-budget, supernatural thriller more in line with his first directorial efforts, which has just been picked up by Universal Pictures.
The Drop, a gritty crime drama starring Tom Hardy and James Gandolfini, debuted in September to little fanfare, which was surprising given how riveting and well-acted the film actually was. Regardless, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is giving audiences another chance to discover The Drop by bringing it to Blu-Ray on January 20th next year.
We've known for some time that Universal is trying to breathe new life into its catalogue of classic movie monsters, with Dracula Untold introducing a new bloodsucker in the form of Luke Evans, and a new Mummy on the way that will find Alex Kurtzman (executive producer, The Amazing Spider-Man 2) directing from a script by Jon Spaihts (Doctor Strange). Now, a new rumor has surfaced claiming that the studio wants Prisoners scribe Aaron Guzikowski to write a new take on The Wolf Man, one of its most treasured monsters.
As Netflix continues to assert itself as a major television company with such acclaimed series as House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, Amazon Studios is racing to catch up by ordering series it hopes will be equally well-received. So far, Amazon has scored one big hit in the form of Jeffrey Tambor-led dramedy Transparent, and it hopes to find some more in the new lineup of pilots, which will be made available for viewing as part of the company’s first pilot season of 2015.
How much gas does the Fast & Furious franchise have left in the tank? If talk overheard by Deadline's Mike Fleming Jr. is to be believed, Universal is already looking at concluding the blockbuster with a massive, multi-film finale, and the studio is keenly interested on getting series director Justin Lin back on board to help them do it.
Well, that was unexpected. Today, Lucasfilm announced that it will be bringing us an animated film titled Strange Magic in just three short months. Touchstone Pictures will be releasing the project, inspired by William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream," into theaters on January 23rd, 2015.
Quality be damned - you put Denzel Washington in an action-thriller, and audiences will turn out in droves. Such was the case this past September with The Equalizer, which received decent reviews but slayed the competition at the box office, having the biggest R-rated September debut of all time and eventually grossing $186.6 million. Now, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that it will be bringing The Equalizer to Blu-Ray just in time for the new year.
Even after her incredible lead performance in last year's Short Term 12, Brie Larson is still flying just under the radar. The actress's star is sure to rise in coming months, though, as she appears opposite Mark Wahlberg in possible Oscar contender The Gambler then takes the lead role in musical comedy Basmati Blues. However, Larson's biggest chance to break out would seem to be in the upcoming Room, adapted from the controversial bestseller by Emma Donoghue.
