One of the main attractions at South by Southwest for thriller fans this year was Open Windows, from Timecrimes and Extraterrestrial director Nacho Vigalondo. The flick, which stars Elijah Wood and Sasha Grey, earned generally positive reviews there and at Fantasia, though our own reviewer Matt Donato had mixed things to say.
Mark your calendars now - the premiere date of FX's American Horror Story: Freak Show, the fourth outing for Ryan Murphy's creeptastic campfest, has been announced as October 8th.
Horror aficionados, rejoice! The Strain, FX's skin-crawling vampire thriller series from Guillermo del Toro, Chuck Hogan and Carlton Cuse, has been picked up for a second season, which will be shooting again in Toronto this November.
After earning screams and raves in equal measure at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, The Babadook will finally be making its way to theaters this fall (though when exactly is still unclear). By all accounts, this one title that horror aficionados won't want to miss - our very own Emily Estep awarded the film four and a half stars, writing, "With its whimsically ghoulish creation and frightfully real lead performances, The Babadook feels just like that actual nightmare you once had."
There are two sides to every love story. And Ned Benson will tell both in this fall's The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, which will hit the multiplex in three different versions. In October, we'll see The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Him and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Her, two separate movies which tell the story of the relationship between Conor (James McAvoy) and Eleanor (Jessica Chastain) first from Conor's perspective, then from Eleanor's. Before that, though, a condensed version titled The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Them will arrive in September.
It's safe to say that most of us are still shell-shocked from the death of Hollywood icon Robin Williams, who took his own life four days ago in his Tiburon home. Since then, more information has come forward about why the actor committed suicide, including a statement from Williams' wife Susan Schneider, which you can read below.
After its historical fantasy series Outlander proved to be a critical and ratings success in its premiere episode last Saturday, Starz isn't wasting any time. Today, the premium cable network picked the series up for a second season of at least 13 episodes (the currently airing first season is set to go for 16 installments).
We are Groot, indeed. Few films in recent memory have warranted the word 'awesome' as completely as Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel's gigantic interstellar gamble, which arrived with some of the studio's most kick-ass characters ever - and definitely its most kick-ass soundtrack yet.
I'll avoid the obligatory joke about a vampire flick lacking bite at the box office, but when Vampire Academy failed to make it past seventh place on opening weekend, with just $4 million upon release and a total worldwide gross of $15 million, chances of a sequel appeared less than likely. However, it turns out that fans of Rachel Mead's novel series can still make an adaptation of the second book, Frostbite, happen. They'll just have to stump up the cash for it first.
Without a doubt, one of this fall's most anticipated films is Inherent Vice, a noirish detective thriller from The Master director Paul Thomas Anderson. For months, we've been predicting that the film will arrive as one of the most potent Oscar contenders in this year's race, thanks both to Anderson's proven abilities behind the camera and the brilliant cast he's put together. Now, thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we have our first look at stars Joaquin Phoenix and Josh Brolin.
