Though Disney's Jon Favreau-helmed adaptation of the Rudyard Kipling classic The Jungle Book, which just added Bill Murray to its all-star voice cast, yesterday, is clearly in better shape than its rival project at Warner Bros., that Andy Serkis-directed film is also taking steps forward. Recently, the studio announced that the movie's title had been updated from The Jungle Book to Jungle Book: Origins.
Ridley Scott is gunning for an Oscar - and if this fall's buzzy Exodus: Gods and Kings doesn't get him to that Dolby theatre stage (as it probably won't, given the slew of competitors including Inherent Vice, Unbroken, Gone Girl and Interstellar), he's already lined up his next attempt. The Gladiator director's next film, sci-fi drama The Martian, has been shifted from its March 2016 date and set for a prime awards-season release date of November 25th, 2016.
Another beloved childhood character is heading to the big screen. Universal recently announced that an adaptation of Clifford the Big Red Dog, based on the children's book series by Norman Bridwell, will be hitting theaters on April 8th, 2016.
This week, Fox Searchlight releases Calvary, the second directorial effort from The Guard helmer John Michael McDonagh, and We Got This Covered is happy to be able to exclusively unveil new images from the darkly funny murder mystery.
David Fincher is a reliably fascinating and moody filmmaker, so I'm very excited to see what he does with the tangled mystery at the heart of his latest film, thriller Gone Girl. The film, which Gillian Flynn adapted from her own bestseller, seems very likely to be one of this fall's most potent Oscar contenders. It centers on a missing woman named Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike), the search for whom turns the country upside down. As her husband Nick (Ben Affleck) searches for any trace of her, the police begin to suspect him of her murder. But as the clues pile up, Nick realizes that nothing in the case of his wife's disappearance is as it seems.
One of the most exciting casting announcements to come out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in recent months has been that Josh Brolin is taking on the role of the incredibly powerful Thanos, a major villain who will show up here and there in Marvel movies before ultimately threatening the Avengers in Avengers 3 (or so the fan theories go). One can imagine that Brolin got a pretty hefty paycheck as part of his multi-film deal with the studio, and Marvel definitely isn't letting the actor rest on his laurels until Avengers 3 in 2018 or '19. In fact, Brolin appears in the (purple) flesh for the first time in this week's Guardians of the Galaxy.
At Comic-Con, Legendary confused attendees quite a bit by unexpectedly unveiling Skull Island at the end of its Hall H panel, which also included Guillermo del Toro speaking about his upcoming film Crimson Peak. Due to the short nature of the tease and its proximity to del Toro speaking on stage about his Gothic horror project, many assumed that Legendary was telling us del Toro would direct the King Kong origin story.
Going from solving grisly murders to ordering them, Dexter alum David Zayas has joined the impressive cast of Fox's upcoming Gotham, a series which will chart the journey of Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) from new cop on the block to the police commissioner of corrupt, crime-ridden Gotham City - long before the Dark Knight ever soared through its skies. The actor will be playing gangster Salvatore "Sal" Maroni in what is described as a recurring role.
You just can't keep a good psycho killer down. Even though 2013's Texas Chainsaw 3D opened to paltry reviews and smaller box office numbers than 2003's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the slasher reboot did well enough to get sequel talk started quickly. Now, a year after Texas Chainsaw 3D, we still knew very little about whether Millenium Films is actually working to bring us another installment - until yesterday.
It's probably a very bad sign that I've heard nothing about Stonehearst Asylum despite the film starring the likes of Jim Sturgess, Kate Beckinsale, Ben Kingsley, Brendan Gleeson and Michael Caine. A cast like that usually gets a movie on my radar - but up until the trailer and poster for this upcoming thriller landed yesterday, I hadn't heard a peep (though it is worth noting that the title was once Eliza Graves, which I had at least heard was in development with Beckinsale starring). Here's hoping that radio silence isn't because Millenium Entertainment is trying to bury the flick - even if the story isn't exactly up to scratch, Stonehearst Asylum should be at least a fun chance to see Kingsley and Caine ham it up.
