When you're Kevin Feige, it doesn't do to just be focused on the task at hand. Though the Marvel head honcho is currently handling this week's Guardians of the Galaxy, he is also responsible for keeping over ten other upcoming superhero tentpoles from the studio on track. Next up after Guardians will be Avengers: Age of Ultron, the climactic chapter of Marvel's Phase Two.
The word 'stacked' doesn't exactly do justice to the cast that Lionsgate has lined up for The Expendables 3, next month's action extravaganza. I'll get to the specific actors in a minute, but the list reads like a who's who of action all-stars. Sylvester Stallone, of course, returns as the leader of the ragtag group, which this time unites to save their young protégés from an evil archnemesis (Mel Gibson). As you can imagine, all types of testosterone-fueled madness ensues.
After getting very up close and personal with Robin Thicke in the NSFW music video for his somewhat sketchy song "Blurred Lines," model Emily Ratajkowski experienced an almost meteoric rise to fame, landing on the cover of GQ and bagging a key supporting role in this fall's Gone Girl, a David Fincher-directed Oscar contender based on the thriller by Gillian Flynn. Now, she's taking more steps to cement her current status as Hollywood's new It Girl by signing on to star opposite Zac Efron in We Are Your Friends.
This December is going to be so jam-packed with awards contenders that us critics will probably have trouble finding breathing room. Luckily, there are still a few titles outside of the Oscar crowd that are aiming a little lower. One such flick appears to be Demonic, the horror title that Dimension Films has just slotted for release on December 12th.
Even if the movies themselves are nothing special, YA adaptations always seem to have the best soundtracks. The best part of every Twilight film was looking at the accompanying albums to uncover some real gems (artists included The Black Keys, Broken Bells, Muse, The Bravery, Sia and St. Vincent, to name a few of many), while the Divergent soundtrack offered some great Ellie Goulding tracks.
Hot on the heels of eleven new images promoting the film, Disney has unveiled the first teaser trailer for its upcoming musical fantasy Into the Woods, which weaves together strands from various classic fairytales to tell an ambitious new story. It's adapted from the Stephen Sondheim musical of the same name (though obviously it has been toned down a little - don't expect to see any sexual tension between Little Red Riding Hood and the predatory Wolf she encounters), and all signs point to this being one of the 'event' movies of this December.
With awards darlings House of Cards and Orange is the New Black ranking among its original series, Netflix no longer has to prove that it can deliver programming on the level of premium networks like HBO and Showtime. So, now it appears that the streaming giant is attempting to stretch itself in other ways, with riskier shows that hardly any other network would take a chance on. One such offering is animated comedy BoJack Horseman, about a washed-up actor, the horse star of '90s sitcom Horsin' Around, looking for a comeback.
Shall I count the reasons we should all be massively excited for Alejandro González Iñárritu's Birdman? It boasts an incredible cast, hails from a truly brilliant director and tells the darkly comedic tale of a washed-up actor mounting a comeback, to name a few of many.
At long last, a sequel to the 2000 martial arts epic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is getting under way, with backing from The Weinstein Company. The cast is still incomplete, but with cameras beginning to roll this week, Glee actor Harry Shum Jr. has just been added in a lead role.
As far as I can tell, no one was begging for a sequel to 2004's The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, but next year we'll be getting one weirder and probably far worse than we ever could have imagined. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, an uneasy blend of traditional animation, CGI and live-action, spent Comic-Con weirding people out with new footage. And today, the first trailer for the film has hit the web, so that you can feel just as confused, unsettled and oddly repulsed as those con-goers.
