We'll have more on this news for you shortly, but for now we just wanted to get it to you as soon as possible. According to TheWrap, The Master star Joaquin Phoenix, who recently appeared in James Gray's acclaimed The Immigrant, is being eyed for the lead role in Marvel's Doctor Strange, which Sinister helmer Scott Derrickson is directing for the studio as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's upcoming Phase Three.
The Last Of Us wowed gamers worldwide when it was first released last June for the PS3, impressing with its tense, bleak tone and cinematic narrative. Now, a feature film adaptation in the works over at Screen Gems, with Evil Dead filmmaker Sam Raimi producing and the game's creative director/screenwriter Neil Druckmann involved, and there's no bigger question on fans' minds than which actors will take on the lead roles of Joel and Ellie, two survivors who band together to survive while travelling across the dangerous, post-apocalyptic ruins of the United States.
With Steven Soderbergh and Clive Owen's period medical drama The Knick arriving next month, and series like Quarry, Blanco and Signal all on the way, Cinemax is taking big steps to establish itself as a premium cable network capable of creatively going toe-to-toe with competitors HBO and Showtime. Now, it's investing in The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman by green-lighting a pilot for Outcast, based on Kirkman's exorcism comic of the same name.
Briefly: Although Woody Allen's latest, 1920s-set romantic caper Magic in the Moonlight, is just opening this week, news about the prolific helmer's next project is already emerging. We had previously learned that the untitled film would be set in modern-day Rhode Island and be a “contemporary story” that centers on “academics, graduate students, and middle- and working-class folks.” Additionally, it was revealed that the cast would include Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Parker Posey and Jamie Blackley.
In one of its most ambitious undertakings to date, Microsoft is moving forward with the live-action Halo: Nightfall TV series, which will debut for the Xbox One this November. Hailing from Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Productions and Microsoft’s 343 Industries, the five-part series is set between the fourth and upcoming fifth Halo video games. Now, we have a taut first trailer for the series, which promises lots of brooding actors and an enigmatic storyline - not much of a surprise, seeing as it was written by Prison Break creator Paul Scheuring.
People come from all over to see specific panels at the San Diego Comic-Con, but I seriously doubt many, if any, attendees were there especially to see the first look at next February's SpongeBob: Sponge Out of Water, a live-action/CGI hybrid that takes the cartoon sponge and other denizens of Bikini Bottom to our world, à la The Smurfs and Alvin and the Chipmunks. It seems pretty clear that this latest attempt to breathe new life into the long-running Nicktoon is going to be very, very strange and probably awful - and the movie's appearance at Comic-Con did nothing to change anyone's mind about that.
It doesn't look like Yahoo Screen will be binge-releasing its newly acquired comedy Community this fall - at the Comic-Con panel for the beloved show, which was picked up by Yahoo Screen for a sixth season in an eleventh-hour rescue following its cancellation on NBC, showrunner Dan Harmon revealed that the actual writing is going to kick off this fall, so episodes likely won't begin airing until "probably some time after Christmas." Unfortunately, that means no Halloween or Christmas specials - but that may be remedied in subsequent seasons.
Showtime's deliciously creepy freshman series Penny Dreadful made its Comic-Con debut yesterday with a Q&A session including showrunner John Logan and cast members Josh Hartnett, Reeve Carney and Harry Treadaway. At the well-attended panel in Ballroom 20, Logan teased the second season of the show, noting that he plans to bring his main characters up against a more tangible human protagonist this time around - and it's someone viewers have already met.
Yesterday, Comic-Con attendees were wowed by the surprise appearance of Christopher Nolan and Matthew McConaughey, both making their Con debuts, at the panel for this fall's highly anticipated Interstellar. More than 6,000 people were in attendance for the panel, which took place in Comic-Con's fabled Hall H.
Honestly, why not? That's the conclusion I've come to about Hot Tub Time Machine 2, Paramount's unlikely sequel to the 2010 hit. After all, in the last few years, we sat through three Hangover movies, two awful Think Like A Man movies and there's even a Horrible Bosses sequel on the way. So why not give Craig Robinson, Clark Duke and Rob Corddry another chance to earn our laughs in this sequel? Especially when the jokes seem as funny as they do in this new red band trailer.
