With its Halloween-ready release date quickly approaching, Screen Gems' update of the Brian de Palma classic Carrie has been busy setting the internet ablaze with lots of new clips and photos, most highlighting the performances of teen star Chloe Moretz, as the titular telekinetic teen, and Julianne Moore, as her wacked-out fundamentalist mother.
Is anyone not on board the Inside Llewyn Davis train at this point? The Coen Brothers' '6os-set musical drama, which opens wide in December, seems poised to take the awards circuit by storm this year, boasting strong performances, an affecting story about musicians struggling to survive in New York City and, best of all, terrific original music performed by its stars. A new, dialogue-driven, three-minute long trailer recently debuted online and, after watching it, I feel more confident than ever that this movie will emerge as a major Oscar player later this year.
Audiences have come to expect a certain degree of invention in Hollywood sci-fi, whether it's hearing explosions in space or freezing as soon as you enter it without protection. Europa Report, an ultra low-budgeted found-footage thriller about a crew of astronauts sent into deep space to explore one of Jupiter's moons, deserves respect for meticulously researching the real science behind its fictional story in order to produce the most unidealized movie about space travel since 2001: A Space Odyssey.
With the November release date of Thor: The Dark World, the second outing for Marvel's super-powered Norse god, fast approaching, the film studio is noticeably stepping up its marketing campaign. We've previously seen a brooding TV spot as well as some major teases by executive producer Craig Kyle about the series' future, and now the first official clip from Thor: The Dark World has surfaced online.
Maybe we should call it 'Unlucky 7.' The ABC freshman drama just became the first casualty of the 2013-14 fall TV season, getting the axe after only two episodes.
For a thriller about the duplicitous world of online gambling, Runner Runner has frustratingly little up its sleeve. Blame the writers. Though director Brad Furman (The Lincoln Lawyer) does a great job of capturing the alternately glitzy and grimy feel of sunny gamblers' paradise Costa Rica, and Ben Affleck sinks his teeth into his role with gusto, Runner Runner's familiar, lazily plotted script bogs it down with an overabundance of genre tropes.
One of the more unlikely box-office success stories of this past summer, Brad Pitt's zombie epic World War Z had a very difficult journey to theaters. Years of development led to a long and bumpy production (including a raid by the Hungarian Counter Terrorism Centre on the film's Budapest set) and one of the most troublesome post-production periods in recent memory, during which the film's ending was extensively rewritten and reshot. Most of the stress around the making of World War Z, not to mention its ballooning budget, likely weighed on the shoulders of director Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace). So, as Paramount moves forward with a sequel to the film, it's not exactly shocking that Forster has opted to step away from the project.
Certainly the honor of 'Nuttiest Film of the Year' goes to Robert Rodriguez's tongue-in-cheek, blood-soaked exploitation flick Machete Kills, which features a bevy of gun-toting beauties (including Sofia Vergara, who sports the most killer brassiere of all time), plenty of high-octane stunts and more than its fair share of over-the-top dialogue exchanges. In case you're skeptical about just how gonzo this sequel to 2010's Machete is going to be, look below for the film's faux-3D trailer and a new set of clips for the film.
Though Thor: The Dark World won't land in theaters until this November, people over at Marvel are already talking about what a third adventure might look like for the hammer-wielding Norse god. According to executive producer Craig Kyle, the set of the upcoming sequel is filled with hints at what fans can look forward to in sequels.
Last year, Ben Affleck's Argo took home Best Picture at the Oscars, and it looks like George Clooney is testing out his own addition to the true-history adventure-drama genre this year in hopes of garnering similar acclaim. The Monuments Men, which opens this December, unveiled a trailer last month that highlighted its huge cast and light but thrilling tone (think Argo meets Ocean's Eleven).
