On the heels of Jurassic World scoring to the highest global bow of all time, and with Marvel's Ant-Man about to make miniature marketable again, Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks Studios has picked up feature film rights to the late Michael Crichton's final novel, Micro.
Jurassic World proved that studios can dust off box office fossils to the tune of record-breaking grosses, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that Paramount and Skydance are more gung-ho than ever about Top Gun 2, which will find Tom Cruise again taking on the role of pilot Maverick.
Marvel and Netflix surprised all of us comic-book aficionados by announcing that Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead) would be joining the cast of Daredevil in its sophomore run as antihero The Punisher, aka Frank Castle. Though less well-known than Avengers members, the character had powered his own films before, and there were rumors he might lead his own Marvel/Netflix series somewhere down the road.
Say what you will about Luc Besson, but the guy knows how to craft a kick-ass action heroine. At CineEurope 2015, his production house EuropaCorp unveiled a packed slate of upcoming films, and included in the roster were a pair of sequels to two of Besson's most successful female-driven action-thrillers: Lucy and Colombiana. That's right - despite Scarlett Johansson's psychokinetic badass ascending past human form at the end of Lucy, and Zoe Saldana's revenge-minded assassin slaying the man responsible for her parents' murders, both characters are gearing up for more carnage-heavy adventures.
After a series of delays, Star Trek 3 - rumored to be titled Star Trek Beyond - heads into production this week in Vancouver, and as Justin Lin prepares to lens the Paramount/Skydance threequel, the film's cast has finished re-negotiations to earn a big pay bump. Simultaneously, stars Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, the highest-paid out in the cast, have closed deals to appear in a fourth Star Trek installment for the studio.
There was a time when everyone thought that Ant-Man was destined to be Marvel's first turkey, derailed by Edgar Wright's unceremonious exit from the pic and a diminished scale in the wake of Avengers: Age of Ultron. Now, however, the first reaction are seeping out onto the web, and the general consensus seems to be that, while the Peyton Reed-directed superhero flick is by no means a classic of the genre, it's also not half-bad. Of course, there are already some nay-sayers in the mix.
Just a few days ago, Magic Mike XXL star Channing Tatum went on record to explain that Sony's plans for the resurfacing Ghostbusters franchise had gotten rather messy, with all manner of potential projects bubbling away without any framework in place to keep them from stepping on each other's toes. Though director Paul Feig will be first out of the gate with a female-led spin starring Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, Tatum had also been involved at one point in plotting a Ghostbusters reboot with Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Joe and Anthony Russo. Now, however, it appears that Tatum and company have given up the ghost (sorry).
At long last, Eli Roth's The Green Inferno is coming to theaters, and as the horror director's ardent followers prepare for what's sure to be some spectacular bloodletting, a new trailer for the cannibal pic has dropped on the film's official Facebook page.
Believe it or not, the Mark Gordon Company and The C.S. Lewis Company still haven't closed the book on their Chronicles of Narnia franchise. It's been five years since Voyage of the Dawn Treader hit theaters, and almost two years since there was any talk about another installment, but today brings a sliver of an update via scribe David Magee's Twitter account. Via Collider, Magee announced that The Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair finally has a script.
