This episode came out later in the week than intended – though it is entirely possible Fridays will be the new regular podcasting day starting soon...more on that later – which meant we had a lot to talk about. Sean played some games. I played some games, including Beyond: Two Souls...and, of course, we still needed to deliver that promised Grand Theft Auto V discussion we kept saying we would do. And in the midst of all that, the BBC went and found two missing Doctor Who serials from the era of the second and greatest Doctor, Patrick Troughton.

Gravity Review

Gravity will undoubtedly be many different things to many different people (though I think all viewers can agree this is the best and most significant film about space travel since Stanley Kubrick’s 2001). I do not assume the reader shall respond to the film as powerfully as I did, and I can virtually guarantee that if they do, it may be for entirely different reasons. That is the mark of great storytelling, of course, and Gravity, for all its many accomplishments, is at its core a wondrous narrative, beautifully executed with an eye for innovation that matches its emotional and intellectual content.

WGTC Radio #65 – Steam News Analysis & More GTA V Talk

Due to a really busy week (those exhaustive Breaking Bad reviews don’t write themselves, you know), I unfortunately did not have time to finish Grand Theft Auto V, meaning that Sean and I were unable to record our promised spoiler-filled discussion on the game’s story. Nevertheless, we still managed to talk for about 30 minutes – spoiler-free, like last week – about our evolving thoughts on this fascinating, frustrating game. Our full, final review will likely be recorded next week, alongside our initial impressions of the upcoming GTA Online.

Breaking Bad Series Finale Review: “Felina” (Season 5, Episode 16)

“Felina” may be the most anticipated episode in Breaking Bad history, but it is not necessarily the first ‘series finale’ the show has produced. Both the Season 2 and Season 4 conclusions, “ABQ” and “Face Off,” could easily have served as spectacular send-offs, as each expertly culminated upon everything that had happened up to that point, and brought closure – either literal, thematic, or both – to the story and characters. “ABQ” saw Jesse’s life utterly destroyed by Walt’s actions after the death of Jane, featured Skyler finally calling Walt on all his bullshit, and ended with Walt’s many sins becoming personified by two planes colliding in midair, right above his house. Had the show ended there, we would have been robbed of three all-time great seasons of television, but there would be no regrets as to the power of the conclusion.

Parks And Recreation Season Premiere Review: “London” (Season 6 Episode 1 and 2)

Parks and Recreation has long been the best comedy on network television, and only those who have failed to watch the show on a weekly basis could ever think otherwise. I can probably name more riotously funny comedies, both past and present – though the show’s 2011 third season could go toe-to-toe with just about any comedy year in terms of outright hilarity – but no television comedy being produced today is nearly as warm, heartfelt, infectiously optimistic, or rich with life and character as Parks. This is a show that makes its audience think, laugh, and even tear up on a mostly consistent basis, but moreso than any modern series, in any genre, it simply fills its viewers with pure, unadulterated joy, and in a media landscape dominated by increasingly dark storytelling, that is an extremely special quality none of us should take for granted.

Breaking Bad Review: “Granite State” (Season 5 Episode 15)

It has been tempting, throughout these last six weeks, to say Breaking Bad has had one of, if not the, best final seasons for an American drama series ever. Even the best of shows are prone to stumbling, in one small way or another, as they near the finish line, but not Breaking Bad. It seemingly got all its stumbling out of the way in last year’s good-but-not-great episodes, leaving these final eight hours open to deliver on every narrative, thematic, stylistic, and character-based promise the show has ever made – and then some. If anything, Breaking Bad has found a higher gear than ever before as it nears the finish line, for by honing in uncompromisingly on the dark, destructive consequences of Walter White’s criminal journey, the series has surprised, stunned, and emotionally devastated longtime viewers, even as it flawlessly delivers each big, climactic, long-anticipated moment in the most satisfying way possible. Best final season ever? I would not have dreamt it going in, much as I have loved Breaking Bad over the years. Yet with each passing week, that historical distinction has come closer and closer within the show’s reach.
