Breaking Bad Review: “Rabid Dog” (Season 5, Episode 12)

For the first three hours of this final half-season, Breaking Bad made a habit of doing the unexpected. Every time the characters were pushed near a breaking point – a place where conventional TV logic would tell us the tension must be diffused, the narrative can kicked down the road – Vince Gilligan and company have burst right on through that perceived barrier. From Walt confronting Hank in the first episode, to Hank confronting Skyler in the second, to Marie bringing brought into the fold almost immediately, to Walt making his aggressive move against Hank last week, even on down to little details like the almost immediate return of Walt’s cancer in the return, this final season of Breaking Bad has traded in delivering long-anticipated moments, revelations, and character interactions, and never wasting a single second in doing so.

Breaking Bad Review: “Confessions” (Season 5 Episode 11)

But that is exactly what has been so great about this final season of Breaking Bad – no matter what happens, every moment we have gotten so far feels like an immensely earned culmination of everything that has come before. Even the set-up for future action, which is what much of “Confessions” is devoted to, plays as pay-off to past material, and builds on our investment in this story and in these characters. I have said it the past two weeks, but the sentiment bears repeating: With so many of its narrative- and character-based cards out on the table, this show has become even richer and more rewarding than it was before. I am as invested now as I ever have been, and we still have five whole episodes to go. If this is the level of quality we get in episode three, one wonders what soaring heights those final hours will ascend to.

Dear Internet: Please Shut Up About Ben Affleck & Batman vs. Superman For The Next Two Years

Last night, I was out of the house for six hours or so attending a screening of Edgar Wright’s incomparable Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy. A glorious time was had by all, as Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are masterpieces and classics, and The World’s End lived up to every bit of that reputation and then some. For six blissful hours, I got to forget about the current, underwhelming state of mainstream cinema, escape from the pervading cynicism of the online entertainment community (which includes both the people who write film news and the readers who comment on it, myself included on both sides of the equation), and instead focus solely on enjoying and digesting three truly tremendous movies.

Breaking Bad Review: “Buried” (Season 5 Episode 10)

In my review of last week’s season premiere, I wrote at length about how Breaking Bad returned wasting no time in exploring characters – and, in turn, delivering big moments – in ways fans have been anticipating for a very long time. Most television series would, even in their final season, delay such gratification until doing so was no longer an option, but from a character standpoint, at least (“Blood Money” was not necessarily a plot-heavy episode, just one that dived right into examining how the ensemble reacts under these circumstances), Breaking Bad started its last eight episodes off like a bullet.

Jobs Review

Jobs is a wildly imperfect movie, and never quite overcomes its zealot-like love for its subject to present a truly three-dimensional character portrait, but it presents, defends, and decently executes a clear and insightful interpretation of its subject, and for that, I respect the film. I even daresay I enjoyed it.

Kick-Ass 2 Review

Kick-Ass 2 is not without its occasional pleasures, but viewed as either its own movie or a follow up to its predecessor, the sequel is a pretty severe disappointment, and a rough cinematic experience to boot.
