Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day Review
Without a frantic pace or much in the way of surprise, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day will please young children who have not seen a lot of movies. Those under eight will “stick” with the zesty humor and actively try to figure out how all of the comedy bits work. Everyone else will probably have to just appreciate the film’s cast, all aces, who give the material a spirit and energy that does not exist on the page.

Homeland Season Premiere Review: “The Drone Queen” and “Trylon and Perisphere” (Season 4, Episodes 1 and 2)
I had given up on Homeland halfway through its third season last year. Showtime’s intriguing CIA thriller had faded into being a shadow of what it was been in its first year-and-a-half, missing the magnetic chemistry between its lead stars Claire Danes and Damian Lewis and the tense, gripping spy stories that accompanied them. In preparation of this rebooted fourth season – one that comes without its haphazard title sequence or almost any mention of prior plot events – I rented the third season DVD and caught up on any holes that could exist in my coverage. To my surprise, as soon as Carrie and Brody ended up working together again in the last episodes of season three, the rest of the wheels – from plotting to pacing – started turning smoothly again.

Box Office Report: Gone Girl Found At #1, Annabelle Close Behind
For now, though, Gone Girl won the weekend, taking in an estimated $38 million. The R-rated, critically-acclaimed thriller debuted beyond industry expectations, and did much better than Oscar-winning films that also opened near the beginning of October from the film's director (The Social Network made $22.4 million in its first three days) and star (Argo's $19.8 million).

Gone Girl Review
Gone Girl is a movie about two marriages. The first union is between Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) and his wife Amy (Rosamund Pike), two out-of-work writers living in small-town Missouri. The second is between director David Fincher and scribe Gillian Flynn. Both Fincher and Flynn are masters of their domain, sharing a knack for precise plotting, macabre stories and finessing those tales with slices of razor sharp comedy. The latter couple is a marriage built to last. The former, not so much.

Masters Of Sex Season Finale Review: “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” (Season 2, Episode 12)
Masters of Sex ties up its messy but powerful and somewhat daring second season with an episode that is all three of those adjectives. It may be a little rushed and features a rather uninspired structural device, centering the storylines on the lead-up to President John F. Kennedy’s inauguration, but the plots are fascinating, the revelations intriguing and the characters behaving in ways that seemed more down-to-earth than usual for the show.
