Red Army may be a film about the rise of the Soviet Union’s hockey team in the 1980s, but do not tell its director, Gabe Polsky, that it is a hockey movie. He wants his critically acclaimed TIFF selection – you can check out our review here – to be a timeless film that isn’t quartered into a designated genre. Thankfully, the doc is insightful and supremely entertaining, even if you rarely tune into ESPN.

Girlhood Review [TIFF 2014]
Bold and beautiful, filled with pain and pleasure, and featuring a throbbing soundtrack and propulsive energy, Celine Sciamma’s drama has also been a film festival darling. It is also, astonishingly, a finer film than Linklater’s. Unlike Boyhood, which focuses on the coming-of-age of a blonde white boy who is aimless and filled with angst, Girlhood is about a black teenage girl in France, fighting with her own identity and yearning to break free.

Masters Of Sex Review: “One For The Money, Two For The Show” (Season 2, Episode 11)
Standing in stark contrast to last week’s dimly lit hour of Masters of Sex, “One for the Money, Two for the Show” is a bright, chipper, often funny episode. (Bright lights are appropriate, given the presence of a TV crew.) It also features some of the best work of the show’s most underrated star, Caitlin Fitzgerald, even if her storyline continues to be a stretch.

Fort Bliss Review
In her newest film, Monaghan plays a respected staff sergeant who must choose between serving her country and serving her family. Fort Bliss should have too small of a run in theaters to boost Monaghan’s profile, but a run on demand could bring the actor the demand (and the bigger parts) she has rightfully earned.

Masters Of Sex Review: “Below The Belt” (Season 2, Episode 10)
That wavering tone and quality continues to be an issue, but with such angry and affecting turns each week, Masters of Sex remains some of the best drama on cable television. The latter half of season two, taking place in the 1960s, has emphasized dark, psychoanalytical character-study over the fresh comic energy of the actual study, the one that gave the show some zest in its premiere season.
