Night Shyamalan is channeling his inner David Lynch for the upcoming TV thriller Wayward Pines. But when a director as stellar and visually kinetic as Danny Boyle attaches himself to a small screen project, you sit up and take notice. Boyle is directing the seven-episode first season of Babylon, a wicked satire that will air in the U.K. on February 9.

Sam Rockwell To Ooze A Criminal Charm In The Eel
Sam Rockwell's inability to secure an Oscar nomination for a career filled with hilarious and dazzling turns in films like Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Moon and The Way, Way Back has not stopped the actor from attracting a large fanbase and much love from the independent film community. In Park City to promote Lynn Shelton's new comedy-drama Laggies, Rockwell is now starting to drum up support for The Eel, which he will star in for writer/director Roberto Bentivegna, whose script appeared on the 2012 Black List.

True Detective Review: “Seeing Things” (Season 1, Episode 2)
Only two episodes in and True Detective is already one of the most visually striking television shows ever to hit cable. Few programs in recent history have put as much emphasis on its setting as an extension of the characters, as HBO’s drama tells so much about the bedraggled state of its detectives just by focusing on the hurricane-ravaged Louisiana woods they drive through. Torn apart but still standing, Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson) and Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) are haunted and guilt-ridden, hoping for normalcy and comfort in a dark, deranged community. Their police cruiser, notably the only car seen on the road, cuts through the destruction at top speed. Can they work together to mend a destroyed community and their own equally tattered psyches?

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit Review
Tom Clancy, the master of the American military thriller, died in October at the age of 66 but left behind a library of terrific espionage novels, several of which featured CIA analyst Jack Ryan. The nicest thing one can say about Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, the fifth big-screen vehicle featuring the titular hero and the first with Chris Pine in the role, is that it does not tarnish the character’s legacy. However, it is not the riveting franchise starter that Paramount may have wanted it to be. Instead, Kenneth Branagh's film works best as a slender if diverting piece of entertainment, curt and focused on delivering a few big thrills and nothing more.

Meryl Street May Take On The NRA In The Senator’s Wife
As Tina Fey joked in her Golden Globes monologue on Sunday, there are still plenty of roles available in Hollywood for Meryl Streeps over the age of 60. The actress received her 18th Academy Award nomination earlier today for her performance in August: Osage County and she is still a formidable box office draw. Naturally, mogul Harvey Weinstein wants to work with Streep again (and nab another chance at Oscar gold) with The Senator's Wife, a story that the executive explains will be a fierce indictment of the National Rifle Association gun lobby.

Modern Family Review: “Under Pressure” (Season 5, Episode 12)
After your series wins four consecutive Best Comedy Emmys, it is bound to get some backlash. One of the most egregious criticisms of Modern Family was how the writers often wrapped up the episodes in a sweet, sentimental bow with gooey truisms about family values and being together. The writers responded to these critic assessments and now use a concluding, feel-good voice-over monologue more sparingly. However, the cutting criticism missed one of the elements of the Emmy-winning comedy that makes it so special. The room Modern Family saves for tender moments show how frequently a dramatically satisfying and deeply moving television series it really is.
