The Minneapolis-based Developer Oointah has just announced the release date for its upcoming pop culture-inspired tower-defense game, Death By Game Show. The game will bring fast-paced strategy mixed with a sharp sense of humour to PC in January next year.
In 1997, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter was released for the Nintendo 64 and PC. While it wasn't necessarily the most original game on the market, it did introduce a vast, free-roaming world to the genre, which was primarily responsible for it being a hit with gamers and critics, spawning several sequels. Night Dive Studios has just released a remaster of the game for Windows, but it appears as though gunning down prehistoric carnivores has lost some of its bite over the last eighteen years. Playing Turok made me realize just how much first-person shooters have changed in a couple of decades. There is no complex cover system, no highly-developed AI, no regenerating health—just the simple run-and-gun gameplay made popular by the original Doom games. Although it is clear to see why it is cherished as a classic of the genre, it does certainly show its age when played today.
The team at Psyonix are no doubt going to be having a very merry Christmas indeed. The developer's mega hit of the year, Rocket League, has brought in a profit of nearly $50 million since its launch in July, attracting over 8 million players with its physics-based, automobile acrobatic gameplay. It's an impressive feat considering that the game cost just under $2 million to make.
Bandai Namco is getting ready to announce a new 'mysterious game' next week, building up to the reveal by setting up an eerie teaser website. The company launched the site via its Twitter feed with the following tweet:
When The Sims 4 was released last year, it was met with some rather cold disappointment from fans who saw it as a step back for the series. The general complaints all centred on the game being stripped of the complexity and seamless open-world of its immediate predecessor, that it was nothing but a watered-down The Sims 3 that went back to the basics of the earliest entries in the series.
Night Dive Studios is continuing its reputation for bringing the first-person shooters of the 90s back from the dead with a new, remastered coat of paint. The developer has already announced plans for a full remake of the cyberpunk classic System Shock (whose long-awaited third installment was teased by Otherside Entertainment earlier this month), and now the studio has revealed that a remaster of the Jurassic shooter Turok: Dinosaur Hunter will be coming out for PC on Steam, GOG, and The Humble Store this week. The team has also announced plans to remaster Turok 2: Seeds Of Evil, though the release date for that one remains unknown.
Microsoft has confirmed that the open beta for Fable Legends, the upcoming free-to-play action-RPG from developer Lionhead Studios, will not be making its pre-Christmas release date as previously announced. Instead, fans can now hope to see the open beta launch during Spring next year. The game's creative director, David Eckelberry, explained the decision to prolong the closed beta phase via a YouTube video published on the developer's channel.
French developer Artefact Studio is going to be bringing a good old-fashioned mystery story to gamers in February with the release of Agatha Christie - The ABC Murders. The game will roughly follow the plot of Christie's novel of the same name, in which an inspector must track down a murderer who has a demented fascination with the alphabet. A video showing a quick glimpse behind the scenes, which can be viewed above, was revealed today along with a release date.
