From the ridiculous to the sublime. On the day that the Hell Baby red band trailer premieres, we also have the first full length U.S. trailer for Wong Kar-Wai’s The Grandmaster.
With the Scary Movie franchise largely direct-to-DVD now, the comedy world needs something to replace it. Enter Hell Baby, the new raunchy horror parody from Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant (of Reno 911!). With the red band trailer coming today, we can see what the pair have in store.
I’m always wary of calling any single actor/director/writer the ‘best’ anything. There’s always room for opinion, as any film blogger knows. To roll out a ‘best’ appellation is pretty much guaranteed to bring the fury of the film-going public down upon my hapless head. So perhaps claiming that Guillermo del Toro is the best director working in Hollywood today is a little much … but he’s certainly ONE of the best.
Not too long ago, we had the pleasure of announcing Angelina Jolie’s sophomore effort as a director: Unbroken, about Olympian and POW Louis Zamperini. Now there’s good news on the Unbroken front as the film has landed a lead in Jack O’Connell and a cinematographer in Roger Deakins.
One thing you have to say for Disney: when they promote themselves, they do it in a big way. If you’re going to make a movie about Walt Disney and his efforts to bring Mary Poppins to the screen, then why not assemble a massive thespian cast with America’s Favorite Actor Tom Hanks at the head? That seems to have been the reasoning behind Disney’s Saving Mr. Banks, whose first trailer just hit.
The question is: who will get the children? Legendary Entertainment is going through a very public breakup with Warner Brothers right now. Guess who they're moving in with? Universal Pictures!
Vin Diesel has once more hinted that he might join the Marvel Universe. Only two weeks ago, he announced via his Facebook page that Marvel requested a meeting with him. That meeting has now taken place, and Diesel left very impressed.
‘John Carter-sized flop’ is a phrase that’s bandied about a lot these days. I regularly use it myself, to describe indifferent meals at restaurants. Although the term might be a bit unfair – we can talk about how Disney mis-marketed John Carter until the day breaks – it has come to stand for a big budget, high-profile film by a major studio that foundered at the American box office. Now we might be able to replace that pejorative with a new title: The Lone Ranger.
Oh, Hollywood. Is there any tragedy you won’t exploit for fun and profit? Apparently not. Word has reached us that the rights to a book about the Boston Marathon Bombing – which occurred a whopping three months ago – have been snapped up by The Fighter writers Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson. So we get to relive all those terrible moments once more, only this time it won’t be real.
Guillermo del Toro needs to stop toying with my emotions. Every five seconds I hear about a new, awesome film he wants to make and I have this terrifying feeling that he’ll never get around to it. I still hold out hope for someday seeing At The Mountains Of Madness, but that’s been receding. Now we learn that del Toro plans at some point to film an adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s novel Slaughterhouse-Five. Oh, and he has Charlie Kaufman writing it.
