The world is divided into two types of people: those who are excited for the latest film in the Riddick franchise, and those who are wrong. Needless to say, I fall into the first category. With a new TV spot for Riddick recently hitting from Vin Diesel’s homepage, I have to say that I’m even more excited.
James Cameron pretty much has an opinion on everything. It does not really matter if anyone asks him for it or not – he’ll still give you a piece of his mind. After sinking a massive boat that singlehandedly reinvented the blockbuster genre, and then preaching the artistry of 3D, Cameron might perhaps have reason to be a wee bit cocky. You have to admit, the guy does some pretty amazing things with available technology.
It might be July 5 now, but that’s no reason not to continue to celebrate the many great Americans that have made cinema what it is today. Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 is unlikely to be the most anticipated film of the year for those over the age of eight, but it still looks pretty entertaining. Maybe I’m just in arrested development, but the first film was so much fun I don’t see how they can go wrong with the second. James Franco will not stop and there’s nothing you can do about it. With his first Faulkner adaptation, As I Lay Dying, standing somewhere between good and terrible, according to the response at Cannes, one might have expected him to stop there. But not James Franco. The actor/artist/director/scholar/writer/astronaut has decided that he’s going to do another Faulkner adaptation of an even more difficult novel: The Sound And The Fury.
I refuse to call this a remake because I don’t think you can remake something that was originally a work of literature. But call it what you will, here’s the low-down: Steven Speilberg and his team at DreamWorks are looking to adapt John Steinbeck’s novel Grapes Of Wrath.
Crowdsourcing is all the rage right now, even for filmmaker who might have a good bit of their own. Folks like Zach Braff, Charlie Kaufman and even James Franco have taken to sites like Kickstarter in an effort to fund projects that … well, really just to fund projects. But Kevin Smith, one of the first directors to consider crowdsourcing, had decided that he will not be doing it for Clerks 3.
You hear a lot about Nicolas Cage these days, and most of the time it is not flattering. Mr. Cage has gone downhill so rapidly that we sometimes forget that he’s actually an Oscar winner and once, long ago, a very good actor. Cage has now signed on to play the lead in Lost Melody, a love story about a man and a prostitute.
For good or ill, Man Of Steel has proved to be a pretty big hit. Big enough to justify the continued talk of a Justice League movie – that’s like The Avengers, but with DC characters. It’s not a major surprise that rumors swirled about Christopher Nolan spearheading the Justice League film, but for the most part those were recognized as pipe dreams. Now Christian Bale at least confirms that whatever happens with Justice League, he will not be Batman.
Sometimes I get so down on contemporary cinema that I begin to wonder if I should not just stop going to the movies altogether. Then, I’m reminded that Guillermo del Toro exists, and that he keeps on making movies, and I feel better. Now that the big robots and aliens are coming at us in Pacific Rim, Del Toro has begun talking about his next film Crimson Peak.
