Everybody loves Shane Black now that we’ve all seen Iron Man 3. Some of us loved him even before then, due to another little film that starred Robert Downey Jr. entitled Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. If you have seen that film – and if you haven’t, go rent it now – then you know that Shane Black is all about pulp fiction and neo-noir. So it’s no surprise that his next project Doc Savage is right in that vein.
Joel Edgerton has been slowly but surely making his mark in Hollywood. He had a powerful role in Zero Dark Thirty, another two in Animal Kingdom and The Great Gatsby, and he'll be starring in the upcoming Jane Got A Gun. Now he’s arranging to work with director Jeff Nichols (Mud, Take Shelter) for an as-yet-untitled sci-fi project that also stars Michael Shannon.
Eat your heart out, Fifty Shades Of Grey. You don’t know what depravity really looks like. But Lars Von Trier does. We’ve already had one weird image from Von Trier’s upcoming two-part film Nymphomaniac, about the sexual adventures of one woman, played in her slightly later years by Charlotte Gainsbourg. Now the first clip from Chapter 1 of the film has been released. It involves chocolate and trains.
That’s it. Hollywood has officially re-optioned my entire childhood. From Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to Goosebumps books to Choose Your Own Adventure, I thought that there wasn’t a book series, TV show or beloved film that they had yet to reboot, repackage or re-configure. I was wrong. Sony Pictures is now in negotiations to pick up the rights to the cartoon series Captain Planet And The Planeteers. Oh. My. God.
Oh, I know that as film bloggers we’re supposed to be a little cynical and worldly and all that, but every once in awhile I just want to giggle at ridiculous puns. Hence my admitted excitement for Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2, the follow up to the surprisingly entertaining Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs. In the run-up to the release of the film, there’s a new featurette introducing us to the adorable food/animals things that have been spawned as a result of the machinations from the first film.
Let’s be honest with ourselves: did anyone think that Escape Plan was going to anything more or less than a big dumb action movie? I mean, it has the names Stallone and Schwartzenegger right at the top.
We’ve been hearing about the possibilities for a new and as yet untitled Frankenstein film for awhile now. With Daniel Radcliffe signed on to play Igor, director Paul McGuigan (Lucky Number Slevin) at the helm, and an October 2014 release date in place, it looks like the movie is coming closer to fruition. Now the question becomes: who’s going to play the good doctor?
I would normally shun to report on anything that has to do with the New York Observer’s Rex Reed – mostly because he’s a terrible film critic and not because he’s also a total jerk. But when Reed decided to use his review space for Identity Thief to criticize Melissa McCarthy not for being in a bad movie but for being overweight … well, I will use just about any opportunity to lay into the guy.
Have you been clamouring for a Heat sequel? Not really, but then again, everything else has a sequel so why not Heat? Val Kilmer for one thinks it could be pretty cool and he has a unique idea about the direction to take it in.
I have been following the controversy surrounding Jim Carrey’s withdrawal of support from Kick-Ass 2 with great interest, not least because it speaks to the concern and debate that has surrounded movie violence for years. Now the issue has grown a little bit stranger – and in my view, more cynical – as a Universal executive referred to the film as ‘irreverant, dark and often offensive.’
