Well, now, here’s a conundrum. This being a movie and gaming site, one would imagine that we try to avoid over-politicization. But, there’s just no way around this one. Because former Senator Rick Santorum (remember him?) is going to run a movie studio.
It’s been awhile since I missed living in Great Britain so much. July 5 is coming up and if I was still a UK resident, I would get the pleasure of seeing Ben Wheatley’s A Field In England. But being American, I will have to wait for another little while and be satisfied with all the delicious trailers and TV spots for the film instead.
Yep, it’s true. Despite being in post-production and unlikely to premiere until the end of the year, we have the first look at Terry Gilliam’s upcoming dystopian craziness, entitled The Zero Theorem.
The Kick-Ass franchise cannot seem to escape controversy. The original Kick-Ass had difficulties from certain groups for giving Chloe Moretz lines that included the c-word. Now Kick-Ass 2 has one of its stars, Jim Carrey, actively condemning it because the level of violence in the film.
I know that you have been waiting with bated breath for the first trailer for the Steve Jobs biopic, starring Ashton Kutcher as the man in the turtleneck. I know that you, like me, don’t see where this could possibly go wrong. I know also that you think that the title Jobs has absolutely no chance of being used against the film, should it prove to be a wash-out. So here we go. The first trailer for Jobs.
If you were in any doubt – and why would you be? – that Independence Day 2 was going to happen, then Fox has something to tell you. It’s happening. Whether you like it or not, Roland Emmerich will be bringing the aliens back to the big screen. How do we know? In the most unpredictable move this year, Fox has set the release date for Independence Day 2 as … July 3, 2015.
I’m not entirely certain what to say about The Smurfs 2. As ridiculous as the original was, and as ridiculous as the latest trailer makes this one look, the fact is that this film just is not geared towards me. It’s geared towards small children and their parents – and maybe, just maybe, towards people who like to get high and go to the movies.
Everything – and I do mean EVERYTHING – is a franchise now. No such thing as a standalone film has made or ever will be made again. There will always be a sequel. So it’s no surprise that Pacific Rim, a film that has not even come out yet, has already resulted in the script for Pacific Rim 2.
While Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming robots vs. alien movie Pacific Rim promises to amaze us on one scale, his Gothic ghost story Crimson Peak is a whole other sort of awesome. At least that’s how it sounds to me, based entirely on the words ‘Gothic ghost story’ and ‘Guillermo del Toro’ being spoken in the same breath. Del Toro has now added another member to the already impressive cast list.
Dystopian sagas have been around ever since we decided that utopian ones were just too unrealistic. So instead we get tales of violence and depravity set against the backdrop of a society gone wrong. In recent years, the heroes of these tales are teenagers, rebeling against the horrific world of adult control and power-hungry…sigh. I can’t even get excited about this any more.
