Up until now, my righteous indignation with the very existence of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot (produced by auteur-extraordinaire Michael Bay) has been largely justified. But now there is a piece of casting news about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that does not make me want to gag myself with a spoon.
Take an iconic camp horror director. Add an actor known for his love of iconic camp horror. Give them a classic ghost story to work on. Sit back and enjoy. That’s basically what’s happening with the proposed film adaptation of the M.R. James ghost story Casting The Runes. Simon Pegg has been set to play the lead whilst horror hero Joe Dante is going to direct.
While the entire purpose of my existence now rests on eventually getting to see Bill & Ted 3, I suppose that we can allow Keanu Reeves to do other films in the interim. He’s right now featured in Generation Um (see our interview here) and has been cast in the sci-fi movie Passengers opposite Reese Witherspoon. Now Reeves has also signed on to play a former hitman in the revenge tale John Wick.

I admit that I have been a very bad film blogger. But now I am intrigued by some of the latest casting news, as Swedish actress Alicia Vikander has been cast as the female lead opposite Cruise.

Paul Greengrass has proven himself time and again to be a very good director when it comes to taut action-thrillers. Between The Bourne Supremacy, United 93 and the underrated (in my opinion) Green Zone, Greengrass definitely has a recognizable style. Now he’s taken to the high seas for the true story of a cargo ship attacked by Somali pirates in Captain Phillips.
It’s a John Travolta kind of day. How long has it been since we said THAT? All kinds of exciting things are happening in Travolta-land and none of them include Battlefield Earth or weird allegations of sexual misconduct! First the announcement that Joe Johnston will direct Travolta in the Gotti biopic; now the news that the star will playing a very different type of criminal in Philip Martin’s heist movie The Forger.
I make no secret about my massive skepticism concerning Michael Bay’s upcoming reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. (Yeah, I know that Bay is not directing it, but c’mon: it’s looking more and more like a Michael Bay film). It’s a terrible idea and I will consider it a terrible idea until something comes along to make me change my mind. That something is most certainly not the recent images of Megan Fox as reporter April O’Neil (via Screen Crush).
